My home place is famous for being home to maybe the largest AAPI diaspora communities in the US. I had to learn on my own that the local mall and race track were the first point of local assembly for Japanese-Americans before they were shipped to Manzanar or elsewhere (like my nana was, at 8 y.o.).

Read “Farewell to Manzanar” in high school English class but we were banned from discussing the prison camps in history class. Only learned decades later about the people taken from our city when I was told about it by the daughter of Fred Korematsu at an education conference…
