Is this really why Labour MPs think they were elected: to strip some of the most vulnerable children in the country of their right to a decent start in life?

My @theipaper.com column on looming SEND reforms inews.co.uk/opinion/pare...
Parents of SEND children should fear what Starmer is planning
This Government seems intent on shredding the rights of the vulnerable

"The UK creative industries — which contributed £125 billion to the economy in 2024 and supported 2.4 million jobs — are being destroyed by an AI sector that, whatever its long-term potential, contributed just £11 billion in the same year and supported only 85,000 jobs."

Latest from me, and one of the most important pieces on Special Needs I've written so far: "In fifteen years of political journalism, I don’t think I have seen anything quite like this: a mad game of briefing, counter-briefing and official stonewalling."
maybeimamazed.substack.com/p/why-the-po...
Why the politics of media leaks, briefings and "sources" is only spreading dread and fear
The painfully long story of the government's SEND reforms has pushed exactly those buttons, among people already used to a level of anxiety that may soon get even worse

In the Emily Holmes' original "tetris can help reduce PTSD" study, what was found was that tetris is an activity which busies the part of working memory called the visuospatial sketchpad: imagining the rotation of shapes.

Tetris used to prevent post-traumatic stress symptoms
A single dose psychological intervention, which includes using the computer game Tetris, can prevent the unpleasant, intrusive memories that develop in some people after suffering a traumatic event.

Former New Labour guy Alan Milburn here in today's Times. Joins Farage in citing 'SEND diagnoses' which don't actually exist. Would love to see data on the bigger claim. Anyway, this is how "overdiagnosis" is being woven through govt policy. Getting support at school = on the fast-track to the dole

Hey! Teachers! Latest from me, on the (free) Maybe I'm Amazed Substack: one big & overlooked part of The SEND reform story is what it'll mean for people in schools who deal with the issues every day maybeimamazed.substack.com/p/special-ne...
Special Needs reforms mean huge changes for already-overstretched teachers: how will they make it all work?
"I’d pay good money to watch a Labour MP spend a week in my classroom," says one teacher: their anger and worry are already impossible to ignore

up now at rolling stone: my report on the perilous state of the touring business for indie acts.

"It was definitely much, much, much more doable just a few years ago. It’s not even about making a profit. It’s about actually being able to do it at all."

Is the Touring Business Broken for Indie Acts?
Artists, agents, and managers say that touring is more expensive than ever, and it's becoming harder for indie artists to make money on the road

If rumblings about Special Needs changes are true, they'll place huge pressures on schools, in the absence of the necessary resources. Also, taking rights away & putting schools in the driving seat would be a retrogressive move: the Labourism of institutions rather than the empowerment of families 1/2
