Woke and proud of it. Lefty liberal who loves Europe and would love to be an EU citizen again. Believe in supporting those in society who need it. Build bridges not walls. #FBPE

Ukraine deal off, Trump says after public spat with Zelenskyy. It is now clear that the US nuclear defence shield for Europe is worth nothing if Trump is in charge. The Europeans need to form a European defence force now and obtain their own nuclear deterrent. www.euronews.com/2025/02/28/t...

Seeing Zelensky's exchange in the white house has reminded me how much I cherish the idea of education for the sake of education.
Having politicians that grow out of a well-articulated, well-rounded, and well-informed public is so important for democracy and for peace.

Titanic paper from @andrewduffeu.bsky.social, which I missed at the time

While there may be some stuff to quibble about, and some of this will be hard reading for Europeans, as well as for some in the UK, as a whole this is what needs to be said.

This should be the focus for join.

A reaction 🧵

Starmer has been totally clear that he stands with Ukraine. The issue is to use such tools as the UK has, which are limited but not entirely negligible, to do so with ruthless pragmatism, and without self-indulgent gestures, however gut-wrenching the former and however tempting the latter.
No. Sometimes you have to pick a side and stand with your allies against tyranny. This is one of those moments.

What is unfolding for the UK is a hard lesson in what 'sovereignty' really means. And it's nothing to do with EU Directives about widgets (which, anyway, we largely still comply with).

1/ I hope everyone today understands that Starmer foolishly allowed himself to be duped by Trump.

Trump, Vance, and Musk are not errant allies. They are criminal enemies of democracy who will exploit any attempt at appeasement for their malign ends.

UK Govt invites public to have a say on water sector future.

Another impression management exercise.

Govt has ruled out public ownership, worker/customer elected directors, worker/customer vote on exec pay.

Won't prevent dividends, inflation-busting customer bill hike, sewage dumping.
Public invited to have say on water sector fit for the future
Independent Water Commission explores fresh ideas on water sector reforms, both evolutionary and revolutionary.

When the British state apologised for, inter alia, Grenfell or Bloody Sunday, I'm sure many Britons agreed it was appropriate regarding those state actions*

Why is acknowledging Brexit - an attack, in alliance with out enemies, first and foremost, on Europe and European citizens - not appropriate?

Incredible that Trump's administration don't seem to realise that the reason Russia doesn't want Nato in Ukraine is because it views *America as its archenemy*.

Yet on they go.

I strongly suspect that Putin and Trump are following a divide and conquer strategy of splitting the UK from the EU. The ground for such a move was laid down by Brexit, which itself was the result of a successful Russian influence operation.

Dividend ban on England water firms unlikely, Government appointed water commission hints.

In public ownership, dividends are not paid. Profits are ploughed into infrastructure investment.

That isn't on the govt agenda.

Commission created to mobilise support for govt. Won't work.

I think it is fair to say that NATO of the last 60 years is gone already, and today was proof of it.

Perhaps we can stop being so parochial about Starmer's trip to Washington now. It was a failure. We are in a battle against fascism. And every decision we make is judged by whether it assisted or opposed it.
