The U.S. government wants to ban TikTok out of concern that user data is going to China.

They demand TikTok be sold to a U.S. owner. This would mean instead of data possibly going to China, it would be in U.S. hands.

How about making sure user data is private, period?

How does one get a Fulbright fellowship to conduct research about Ukraine when a war means no such funding is possible? You apply to teach and research in Moldova, instead - just a three-hour road trip to Odesa. Made it through Round 1 and now it heads to Chisinau for further review.

In my sociology classes, I use Santa as an example of a cultural ritual that is creepy out of context.

An old man obsessed with children sitting on his lap, who laughs strangely, asks if they've been naughty, and then breaks into their houses is cause for legal action, not treats. The kid knows.

I'm a social scientist, so I get it.

But it still strikes me as depraved when I see a survey question gambling on the rights of the most vulnerable.

Florida is coming after sociology, as GOP across the country tries to control (higher) education within constraints of First Ammendment.

Florida Tries a Subtler Way to Curb Progressive Ideology: Cut Sociology
Conservatives in Florida have moved from explosive politics to subtler tactics to uproot liberal “indoctrination” in higher education by removing subjects like sociology from core requirements.

A lot of people responsible for poor decisions are on a press tour right now because if they didn’t, people would rightfully be questioning THEIR leadership and they know it.

It’s weak even by normal left-punching standards. Zero evidence more Liz Cheney would have won this. The opposite, actually.
