Words fail me. Of course apprenticeships should be well funded, but this zero sum game attitude is absurd.

It was a very successful industry. Fees were not introduced that long ago. People like me moved to the UK because of its great UK HE system when there were no fees and great autonomy for academics. Most academics are against fees.

Always great to realise anew that (some of) the UK political class is prepared to sacrifice one of its very successful industries in this despicable way.

When you study a language that has, say, 500 inscriptions surviving and someone out of the blue SENDS YOU FIVE MORE...! I don't think I've ever cancelled my plans faster than when Dan sent me these. So pleased everyone can read this wonderful publication.

If you remember last autumn when I was live-skeeting excavations at Rossano di Vaglio, the first report of that work has just been published (in Italian). Happy for it to see the light of day, and also very pleased to present five new Oscan inscriptions to the world...

As more of my valued colleagues face the threat of redundancy, here’s a quick reminder that it takes years and years of public investment to train an academic. Cutting someone with this wealth of experience loose isn’t “saving” anything. It is a massive waste of our collective resources.

Knowing myself, I would enjoy teaching (parts of) much broader modules on the history of science/medicine/ideas, if the opportunity were given, but teaching to my narrower expertise is very special.

#TinyJoy is being able to teach my module on Greek and Roman Medicine. This may be taken away from me, but I will treasure the opportunity until the very end.

I don't know whether to laugh or to cry. Who OKayed this campaign? I mean, it's great teaching material. Had I known of it a few hours earlier, I would probably have used it in teaching (on Hatshepsut's 'expedition' to Punt, wherefrom myrrh, among other things, was brought back).
