“What’s a magic school doing in Indiana? If my mother’s a faerie, what does that mean for me? What’s teaching combat look like? You’ve got to start there if you’re going to hook your audience without an in medias res inciting incident!”
“… you don’t have many friends, do you?” Perrenette asked.

73k words in and I’m like. maybe 25% done with this book. I’m lucky it’s never getting a print release.

there’s slow burn romance and then there’s “one of the MCs doesn’t know the other exists for two whole novels and they spend the third unable to physically touch due to living on separate planes of existence and communicating through astral projection”. why did I choose this? who knows

I continue to make ill-advised ads that i release late at night because this is my Brand and if you're up at midnight EST then you deserve quality late-night shitpost promos. Why see ads for injury claims lawyers when you can get quality infogayment like this?
A jokey ad for my book. On a bed of blood spattered roses white text asks: What does a lesbian bring to a first date?

A. A forty billion dollar dagger
B. A divine debt
C. Trillionaire daddy issues
D. 300,000 clones
E. An impending sense of doom
F. All of the above

If you guessed F, congrats!

idk it’s just very weird that instead of criticizing her for her greed or her soulless pivots toward maximum appeal or her politics what I’ve personally seen the most of is “but she doesn’t understand Shakespeare!” be serious. we have real problems here.
lucillewalterblack.bsky.social
we can maybe accuse her of being self-centered but we’d have to do that for everybody who went “he’s just like me fr” about Hamlet, not to mention the countless female artists who’ve similarly felt kinship with Ophelia and used her in their work. Shakespeare’s plays invite that kind of engagement.
lucillewalterblack.bsky.social
there are a lot of good criticisms of the latest Taylor Swift album but “she just doesn’t get Hamlet” isn’t one of them - not liking how the story ends isn’t not understanding it, and applying themes from Hamlet to her life is something people do all the time in their own art/writing/music
lucillewalterblack.bsky.social
at the risk of sounding like I’m going to bat for a billionaire (I’m not) I think that perhaps we should consider the misogyny in our criticisms of women’s interpretations of Shakespeare when they don’t sound suitably academic or intelligent but instead engage with his work like any other story
lucillewalterblack.bsky.social
I also think that if you read developmentally appropriate literature and devoured it in one-book-a-day gulps as a kid, transitioning to a harder book as a young adult can freak you out and make you freeze up.

On Tumblr there’s been an influx of people reading classic lit bc the success of Dracula Daily inspired others to set up mailing lists - I’ve seen ones for Moby-Dick, Les Mis, Sherlock Holmes, and several Dickens books. IMO you’re right that it helps a long book feel approachable to nervous readers

it’s all William and Mary’s fault. it’s also all Henry VIII’s fault, but everyone gives him the blame he deserves already.

Yes, to both. Peri and Virgo are metaphorically haunted by the deaths of their best friends when they were 21, which shattered their partnership and forced an estrangement. Meg, on the other hand, is literally haunted by an exiled faerie king who’s been waiting for her to notice she’s not alone.

Hiya #queerwriterschat, I'm Emily! I'm working on planning a YA fantasy superhero novel! (heck of a mouthful)

I'm looking forward to starting that. I'm also looking forward to a couple get-togethers I'm going to and a couple chances to fix some chronic health problems.

Hi #QueerWritersChat! I’m Lucille or Lucy, I write fantasy, and I’m working on what I can only call an adventure/mystery urban f/f romantasy called Blood Ties and Brickways centering around a young woman named Meg as she navigates the faerie Midwest and falls in love with an undead lesbian god-king.

In all seriousness, publishers are going to have to figure out how to market books in the post-social-media landscape. That should be an implicit part of their job. What authors/artists can do on their own is increasingly limited and siloed.

the series that this story started as a (pointed, frustrated) reply to features bigotry as a plot point but can’t decide what to do with it, and the consequence of being a marginalized person and wanting to write about systems of power = somebody has to talk about fantastic racism and it’s me
