Genuinely, the reliance on phones and 'apps' has made people so incredibly pathetic when it comes to using anything that's slightly inconvenient, despite smartphones being an awful device to do most tasks. There was a time where you would actually visit several sites & use several programs at once!

Sometimes the threat of losing the userbase is also what could pressure people to improve their services. If there's no pushback, no criticism, and no competition, then naturally services will get more invasive and less functional. Cancelling Nitro is a decent start to send a message at least.

Feed based websites promoted the concept of apathy rather than a sense of agency. In the past too, people switched services for so much less than some of things happening recently. Keep in mind that there are a lot of potential alternatives for messengers if Discord really goes through with this.

I hope people can become familiar with the concept of not putting all faith into a single service/platform again. It was ten years ago that Skype became inconvenient so people switched from using it. Even further back people manually opted to download and use other browsers than Internet Explorer.
