We assess the potential of multiple biodiversity monitoring techniques:🌿 structured field-based monitoring, 👫citizen science, 🧬DNA-based methods, 🎤digital sensors, 🛰️satellite remote sensing, and 🛩️aerial platforms. And identify specific needs and requirements to advance EBV workflows

📣 Using a comprehensive stakeholder consultation, we highlight current capacities and needs for implementing transnational and transinstitutional biodiversity data streams.
This includes key steps like 🌿data collection,🗃️ integration, and 🌍modelling

Exciting news! 🎉 Our new paper, Towards implementing workflows for EBVs, has been published in Global Ecology and Conservation. This work lays out the first representation of workflows to guide the future implementation of EBVs in the EU

Humanity is choosing to fail!

We are doing virtually nothing to try and limit global warming to even 4°C.

Let alone to 1.5°C.

Methane concentrations are following the highest IPCC scenario, now at 1938 ppb.

The number of working satellites has soared in the past five years to around 11,000, mostly because of constellations of orbiters that provide Internet connectivity around the globe, but it comes with a series of problems. Nature explores the issues and how scientists are reacting. 🔭 🧪
Swarms of satellites are harming astronomy. Here’s how researchers are fighting back
SpaceX and other companies plan to launch tens of thousands of satellites, which could mar astronomical observations and pollute the atmosphere.

Amphibians are at risk of overheating due to climate change in both hemispheres
2% species are currently exposed to overheating even in shaded conditions, so water bodies are essential for them to buffer the effects of heat waves @patricepottier.bsky.social @nature.com www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Social democracy is not a viable alternative to capitalism. It is a tempting prospect, but ultimately suffers from violent contradictions that cannot be sustained. 🧵

Tackling Peer review without tackling the unfair editorial system hijacked by big companies is not very illuminating. And I disagree strongly with some ideas, such as paying reviewers (capitalism will pervert the system quickly) or using AI (what can go wrong?).

FIL 🧵
