There was poetry discourse this week, so thought I'd share this thing that popped into my head while I was sitting on the runway at DTW.

I am experiencing winter!

Our 15.5 year old elder fluff, Olivia, is similarly indulged.

Found this bit of ephemera while organizing my office.

I worked with Baca on over a dozen shows (hard to count how many exactly) including Adam Szymkowicz's Hearts Like Fists and Robert Kauzlaric's stage adaptation of Neverwhere at Know Theatre.

A sketch of a spaceship that perhaps could accommodate a thrust stage and audience in its hold.

Found this on my doorstep this evening!

Not ideal.

As someone who continued to look pretty young until the pandemic hit, I now acknowledge that I am aging like Matthew Broderick.

A little teaser for the new project I'm working on before the official announcement.

I mean... if I wanted to share great production shots, I would have used these photos by @danrwin.bsky.social .

But I was using my own archival shots to show the full stage picture to represent scope of set vs. budget which is a very different thing?

For Lisa Sanaye Dring's Kairos (2024), directed by Rebecca Wear, the set I designed was built from scrap lumber, stock platforms, and a couple hundred bucks of fire retardant plastic, with stock benches. It took just a handful of days to install.

Very inexpensive materials, but very expressive.

I've been thinking a lot about this monologue from Steven Dietz's beautiful two-hander Lonely Planet (published 1994).

The same critic called my lighting of the production "fine" [non-complimentary], and I submit this production shot by Mikki Schaffner as rebuttal to that particular assessment.

As a little treat I got myself a ticket for Godot for my birthday next month.

Here's a photo from my scenic & lighting design for the show at Cincy Shakes 10 years ago.

In one of my favorite reviews of my work ever, a critic called this set, "sparse and uninteresting."

Here's a progress update on The Whaling Hour at the start of this week.

I'll likely finish at the end of October. I could squeeze things to be done a little sooner, but I want to make sure I set aside a dedicated installment for The Chase and epilogue.

You can catch up at distanceovertime.net.

Happy Birthday!

I have no recent cat photos, but here is one from a few months ago that I may not have shared.

We posted this values statement on the website as our 2019 strategic planning process progressed. It was also removed in July 2024.

The vision statement mostly remained the same, with a key difference. See if you can spot the bit that was removed!

As a brief postscript to last week's thread on mission statements in theatre:

Here is the mission statement from my tenure in leadership of Know Theatre as compared to what it was changed to about 3 weeks after I turned in my keys.

Back in 2011 at Cincy Shakes we did a production of 2 Gents set in 1970's NYC that featured a lot of Chuck Mangione.

(This was in the old shoebox theatre when there was no money and a motley collection of lights. Set and lighting design by me, costumes by Heidi Jo Schiemer, sound by Chris Guthrie.)
