I'm excited to share a new paper at Social and Personality Psychology Compass with @erinhughes.bsky.social and @amymuise.bsky.social on self-expansion theory. We trace the theory back to its origins, discuss how well the original ideas have been tested, and what ideas remain: tinyurl.com/y8ppsz9k

To help instructors diversify course content, we’re building a database of articles focused on the relationship experiences of marginalized and underrepresented populations. Do you have any to recommend (perhaps one you’ve written yourself or read recently)? Recommend it here: tinyurl.com/IARRrecs
graphic displaying the following text: “The IARR Teaching Committee is seeking article recommendations focused on the relationships of underrepresented populations.” below that text, a link appears to a form where people can provide recommendations: tinyurl.com/IARRrecs

What kinds of conversations spark instant connection?

Excited to share my first NYT Guest Essay, with @ericaboothby.bsky.social.

We argue that playful riffing — creating a little world together — forges and deepens relationships through shared reality.

This special issue "invites submissions on research areas recently de-prioritized and/or de-funded that address or discuss how social cognition approaches can aid in the understanding of these critical societal issues."

Plz consider submitting!

I'm putting together a new grad seminar on the psychology of social class/socioeconomic status for this fall. I'm interested in highlighting new work/ideas/topics in this growing field and would welcome any suggestions! (And please don't hesitate to suggest your own work.)

🎇NEW PUBLICATION ANNOUNCEMENT🎇

“Love may be a many-splendored thing, but it’s also a battlefield.”

So begins my "Romantic Relationships" chapter in the new, OPEN-ACCESS, Handbook of Social Psychology (6e). The chapter synthesizes what I've learned in my 28 years in the field.

I want to thank Nicole for inviting me to join her and Sarah on this monumental undertaking. This is the first-ever chapter on social class in the HSP -- it was exciting to see how much we've learned as a field about this pressing social divide, and how many more questions remain! (4/4)

We close with recommendations, including how to think about choosing a measure of social class. (One thing we noticed in reviewing the literature is that measurement is often inconsistent, and we hope this advice will be useful to researchers in deciding what measures to choose.) (3/4)
lydiaemery.bsky.social
In the chapter, we define what social class is and how it relates to constructs like status and power; give a history of research on the topic; discuss major theories of social class; and analyze its effects across four levels of culture: ideas, institutions, interactions, and individuals. (2/4)

I'm thrilled that this is not only published, but free and open-access to make our science available to everyone. Brief thread about Chapter 24 (Social Class), from @profnicolestephens.bsky.social, Sarah Townsend, and me: (1/4)

Since 1954, "The Handbook of Social Psychology" has been the field’s most authoritative reference work, and today is the launch of the 6th edition with 50 new chapters by 100 leading scholars. Best news? The HSP is now an open-access public resource—free to read, download, and share. the-hsp.com

We were wondering if anyone would get the reference! @abdoe.bsky.social is a big fan. We went to fairly elaborate lengths to make sure the examples in the paper about the couple are movie-accurate lol
lydiaemery.bsky.social
That’s great to hear — I hope it’s helpful!
lydiaemery.bsky.social
We hope people find the paper to be a useful resource and that it might generate ideas for future work on this topic! (4/4)

We also discuss some of the antecedents and outcomes of merging across these literatures (e.g., merging is typically associated with better relationship outcomes, but not always -- too much closeness can be bad for a relationship). (3/4)
Figure 2 from the paper "Merging in Close Relationships" showing some of the antecedents and outcomes of merging
lydiaemery.bsky.social
In the paper, we attempt to put these literatures into conversation in a way that is accessible for students in particular. We suggest that merging can result in increased similarity, increased differentiation, or something *emergent* -- more than just the combination of the two partners. (2/4)
