The core point of the judgment is that the Dutch Supreme Court left this legally clear issue to the counterbalancing policy decisions. The reasoning was disappointing, yet I still hope that the government finds "clear risk" (and no further balancing exercise).

The highest court in the Netherlands ordered the Dutch government to reevaluate its currently suspended license for exporting parts for F-35 fighter jets to Israel in response to concerns they could be used in breaches of international law.

This is disappointing, to say the least. Legally speaking, if there is a clear risk, EU member states cannot export relevant arms, and full stop. I do not think that other international agreements are meant to be counterbalabcing the decisions arising from this risk.

since early 2025 I have set up a monthly donation to Wikipedia (one of humanity’s greatest achievements) and you should too. AI is (partly) a reaction against the extraordinary democratic promise that is Wikipedia.
volts.wtf
We laugh at this shit -- I mean, how can you not? -- but it's serious: these guys want to infuse reactionary thinking into AI and then infuse AI into every nook & cranny of American life. They can't win the argument so they are trying to blunt-force their views onto us with money & power.

"This echoes the darkest chapter of the 1990s when the council was rebuked for its failures during the genocides in Rwanda and Srebrenica."

"Today, the same question will be asked of us in our failure to act."

Remarkable speech.

In its justification for the rejection, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs fails to mention of the use of the profiling algorithm and doesn’t provide an assessment of its impact on human rights. The court hereby mandates a Fundamental Rights Impacts Assessment. 3/

This is excellent, high-level stuff, bringing expert analysis (and a bit of academic infighting) to a general audience.
