Kids have a developmental phase from like 10-15 where they're hyper independent. It suuucks! It's not personal, and it's okay to insist on hanging out. It's good for them to have a mix of independence and quality time. Once adulthood looms closer, kids usually gravitate towards their parents again.

It took 40+ years, but we're too spread out now. What a run! I'll deeply miss these parties, but am forever glad they were.

I think it's a combo of catastrophizing and learned helplessness. It feels safer to assume the worst when overwhelmed with uncertainty and cruelty. Being reminded of our agency can feel invalidating. Survival instincts only have to be "good enough," so they're often a bit maladaptive, too.

Thanks! I finally got to spend some quality time with them this week and weekend, too. More than just the being a parent part.
