"Extreme violence continues to afflict women daily in Myanmar, from airstrikes to shelling, to arson, to ground raids where rape is still used as a weapon of war. With no legal framework to reinforce & protect their rights, they are at grave risk"

Extract from Thin Lei Win’s piece on Myanmar:

Here's my plea to the international community: Please push the junta to reverse its flimsy excuse for not allowing foreign journalists into the country, to honour the ceasefire it has finally announced days after pro-democracy groups committed to do so, to stop airstrikes of the kind it launched hours after the quake, and to allow unfettered access for aid and aid workers.

Please do not rely on the junta alone to deliver aid. Please work with a variety of actors, including local groups with access to some of the most disconnected areas.
Volunteers on the grounds are already worried about diseases spreading if the dead bodies are not removed soon because April showers usually accompany our new year, which starts next Sunday.

Much has been made of the Myanmar people's resilience in the face of never-ending misfortune, but I have come to resent the term. We are resilient because we have had to be, because no one else has come to our aid.

This direct undermining of local organizations and their capacity to deliver life-saving emergency assistance, as they have done for decades, is not only ignorant but plays into the junta's hand. By donating to groups with MoUs with the military, aid will undoubtedly be weaponized.
davidbrenner.bsky.social
Patronising ignorance!

International organisations either abide by the junta's restrictions on access (UNICEF, ICRC) or will not be given full access (MSF).

The people of Myanmar unfortunately have to rely on their own humanitarian solidarity networks. By all means give to them!

Critical call urging localized assistance to survivors and victims of the devastating earthquake in #Burma. The junta is not a trusted or reliable partner in aid relief, especially as airstrikes by the military continue to target emergency areas. Assistance is most effective when channelled locally.
