SUNDAY READING:

Anna Jones invited me to take over her newsletter to talk about my beloved Mandalay, give my recommendations for what to watch, read, buy and more, and to share my recipe for the irresistible Burmese charred tomato salsa known as Pan Htway Pyaw 🇲🇲❤️

If you look very closely you'll notice my swaztika t-shirt is made up of thousands of microscopic letters all spelling out 'hope' 🙏🙏

Free stickers suitable for flag-bearing lampposts. Send a large A4 envelope with a 1st class large stamp to me at Bragg Office, PO Box 6830 Bridport DT6 9BH and I’ll send you a sheet. #ReclaimtheFlag 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇬🇧

It’s not in the right place if you read his replies to people saying it’s not a good idea

I saw this and didn’t know whether to laugh or cry

Next he’ll put the flag in his username and encourage his followers to do the same and then loads of us will just block them on sight

When I was a kid, my vaguely socialist dad used to be fond of him, Mark Thomas, and Mark Steel, and so in my mind, they basically became one grown-up who I dubbed “a good white man”.

But that’s how I know they’re all old now because even I am nearly 50 😅

I mean, we don’t know how many of these things he’s printed and we all know how expensive printer ink is 💀

Omigod I’d forgotten about that 😭

It's hard to know whether to be more stunned at the admission that his stickers will cause distress but thinks it's fine because it's actually about his own pridefulness, or the claim that white English people will be motivated by this impact from the "nice" England flags but not the "bad" ones.

The way he doubled down on his progressive flag advocacy in the replies was outright offensive. At one point, he said 'i get it but this is my opinion' casually dismissing how many POC feel. Beyond that it's a meaningless strategy. Stickers aren't going to defeat emboldened fascists.

I wasn’t familiar with the term, although I sadly understand the concept 😢 (thanks for teaching me!)

I grew up in SE London in the 80s and 90s and the same.

Bragg’s lived through that whole era and seemed like an ally - he should KNOW this.

Scornflake Ghoul’s assessment was right
scornflakegrrrl.bsky.social
They’re not about comforting anyone than those who are made feel like they’re good people for displaying them. It’s pure centrist brain rot. Disappointed that Bragg is promoting this

There are better options than ‘MOAR flags’

Putting my anti-Nazi stickers up in various cities I visit. I’m going to try to hit EVERY city in the UK. I might need some help though.

I'm a white gay man and that's pretty much my reaction when seeing this flag too.
Because the racists flying it are most likely homophobes as well.
And I'm not going to stick around to find out
meemalee.bsky.social
Oh wait, it turns out Bragg’s solidarity is meant for his peers 🙃

I told him my wife would also avoid stickers or flags and he said "Then the stickers will send a message to white English people who are appalled by the way the flags make your wife feel that they are not alone in opposing the racists". An absolutely jaw dropping response, where to even start?!

Inb4 someone arrives to flag-splain how it's not a racist symbol because of the football and cricket teams and ho-

....NOPE. If I drive through an area festooned with the cross I'm putting the central locking on and making a break for it. It's not on minorities to fix the symbols appropriation

I’m white, and my first instinct on seeing those stickers would be to walk past as fast as possible. How on earth does Bragg think they’re going to comfort anyone from an ethnic minority?

This isn't theoretical / political for so many of us.

It's about our actual safety, mental and physical.

100% this.

I'm not going to get close enough to see whether or not the flag that's been used by nationalist racist pricks all of my lifetime is some white saviour's 🤮 attempt to turn its symbolism around.
