I'm fairly sure this isn't the first time spying has been used in UK universities. Hasn't there been tactics to get students to go sleuth on striking academics? Or universities who hire private investigators to track students involved in activism.

Anti-intellectualism is a core aspect of right wing politics. Learning for the love of it is getting lost in the marketisation of higher education. They want universities to be job training mills with STEM ruling the roost, not to help develop free, critical thinking to question power.

The way he doubled down on his progressive flag advocacy in the replies was outright offensive. At one point, he said 'i get it but this is my opinion' casually dismissing how many POC feel. Beyond that it's a meaningless strategy. Stickers aren't going to defeat emboldened fascists.

A whole bunch of us have grown up in the UK knowing to flee in the other direction if we spot this flag anywhere. We’re not going to pause to see if there are stickers stuck below them.

And if they’re stuck elsewhere, we will not get close enough to see the text - again, we’re just going to leg it.

He is gaslighting and manipulating what was said. Deliberately avoiding the fundamental source of the problem which is that horrible godforsaken flag. The white English people he's talking about aren't the ones who'll be resisting the far right on the streets.

The thought process of "we should be patriotic about the *good* things in England/Britain/the UK" is lazy.

It ignores the fact that those "good things" are built on the bodies of millions of global majority people.
