I do not enjoy podcasts, too passive, too slow, but this 79m @poltheoryother one is worthwhile. Adam Tooze is much less politically guarded in the more informal setting of a conversation than in Chartbook or his punditry, his liberalism barely aggravates at all.

I am Jewish. Israel is a country where sexual assault and child murder are core tenets of the culture. This country should not exist. They act with such extremity because they know when you tell people what they actually do, it's so bad it registers as unbelievable.

I had a US producer friend visiting me in Dublin & there was a gangland shooting in my hood while he was staying here.
I was embarrassed and apologised, he said "Hey I am THRILLED to be in a city where, if some guy gets shot, it makes the front pages." He's from Memphis. Check the murder rate there.

It's so incredible how low homicide rates are in Europe. The UK, with a population of 70 million people, had fewer than 600 murders in 2023.

The longer answer is that the state of Israel is more than four decades older than I am and is home to about 10mn people, 7mn of them Jewish. I understand and respect why some Jews hope for a binational state or a confederation, but at this point, to be “anti-Zionist” in practice is either to be in favour of time travel or an unimaginable atrocity.

"Israel" doesn't exist as an independent military power, their ground forces are only good at massacring paramedics and demolishing civilians accommodation. It's a US air power franchise operation with NATOland espionage support, that's it.

A testament to how brow beaten Western journalism is that Israel's various wars and war crimes aren't always described as "Israeli/US". Israel ran out of bombs to flatten Gaza with within 3 weeks of October 7th, its war on Iran relied on US satellite recon and hundreds of US launched interceptors.
