If you try to be authentically yourself with everyone, it's hard to accept how well others can compartmentalize. To know that they are, like many abusive narcissists, inside a bulletproof prison of their own self-pity & self-regard. They count on & cultivate our inability to see their other selves.

For a v long time, I conflated "person who can make good art" with "person who has a functioning moral compass." I think that transference (based on appreciation, love, enthusiasm) is something a lot of us do. It hurts a lot when we find that our appreciation was hijacked so someone can do bad shit.

I cannot overstate how little it matters if there’s even any money in it. As someone I was having this conversation with last night pointed out, sometimes it’s worse when there’s none!!
