The long term data on hepatitis B vaccination shows it reduces the incidence of liver cancer by 84% and death from liver disease by 70%.

This comes from a large cluster RCT in which entire towns were randomly selected to give the hepatitis B vaccine to all newborns.

At Our World in Data, we spend much of our time counting deaths.

But it’s just as important to know the number of lives saved — even though it is harder to estimate and involves much larger uncertainty.

Someone named Mrdn (we don’t know the vowels) took the time to chisel his name into a rock face in the middle of the desert while accompanying king Nabonidus “in the waterless wilderness”.

He is saying “I was here and so was the Babylonian king” in a local script. I think that’s incredible.

I've written a free and accessible guide to Cephalopod Sentience with Alex Schnell, Piero Amodio and Peter Morse, stunningly illustrated by Roksolana Tkach. Please download and share! It's worth it for the illustrations alone! 🐙 thebrooksinstitute.org/sites/defaul...
