There are a lot of mainstream collabs that get marked down as "written by x, drawn by y" that are actually a lot more fluid. If you worked with a writer for something mainstream I believe the work would be the strongest if you are involved with the writing in some significant way.

And even though I was the one that brought up terminology I don't *actually* love getting invested in those kinds of distinctions. Same goes for the art vs. entertainment you mentioned.

There at least used to be a more discernible lineage from newspaper strips to indie/alt comics that isn't as much there now that a younger generation has folded in way more manga and animation, so I'm with you on "cartoonist" having a stylistic & genre association.

I wouldn't want to give the impression that I'm anti-collaboration (most of my favorites from my own work are made that way) more to avoid the concept that comics are best understood as the combination of two distinct forms: image and story.

One of the reasons I like “cartoonist” as the term for a comic creator, is that to me the default understanding should be that one person creates the entire comic. Plenty good can come from more collaborative versions, but those methods should be the exception.
