Saw an ancient woodland up for sale with someone saying it should be bought and restored. Somebody else was offering to pay for it.

Three years in and the restoration is coming along nicely, with an army of local regular volunteers all also mostly found through social media. 🫡

Here are my chukkas, bought in 1992 and worn for work plus the odd hack. They’ve been resoled and show signs of wear from the stirrups but are still going strong.

And the black Oxfords I bought before my daughter was born? I wore them to walk her up the aisle last year (in socks my mum knitted me).

I see the downside, living behind a pub that’s illegally built a plastic shack next to it, more than doubling its size and amplifying the drunken shouts and shrieks, the chants of ‘happy birthday’ and the amplified drag queen* bingo/quiz nights.

* the drag queen was very apologetic when I popped in

The interesting part is the way that ‘we’ has been scratched out and ‘you’ put in its place.

Are they writing all his Truths and convincing him that he’s their author?

Quakers: the OG challengers of violent Christian nationalism
friendsjournal.org
Many of the men and women in the first generations of the Religious Society of Friends spent time imprisoned for challenging the intertwined religious and political power structures of England.

When you take on the world’s ruling powers, persecution comes with the job.

A portrait of John Perrot, a 17th-century Friend who was held in an insane asylum by the Vatican for several years after he tried to convince the pope to abandon Catholicism. (Since he spoke no Italian, and the pope spoke no English, the meeting went poorly.)

Shirley Henderson won my heart with Robert Carlyle in Hamish Macbeth. I keep hoping she’ll find a part that does justice to her.

That recommendation is good enough for me. The film looks great, but even the trailer makes me cry, so we’ve been waiting for a bit of a nudge to see it.

Have you head @annalisadinn.bsky.social’s excellent Radio 4 documentary on awkwardness - other people’s reactions to the way some people are?

We’ve just dined at Ciccoria, Angela Hartnett’s new restaurant at @royaloperahouse.bsky.social

We’ve been regulars here since 1987 and at the Balcony restaurant since it opened, so we weren’t sure…

We needn’t have worried. The food, drink and service are to die for (as we told Angela herself!)

I’ve struggled with weight, diet and exercise both ways. Just before I was married, I cycled obsessively and got myself to 160lbs (ideally I should be 180lbs). Before I transitioned, I ate little and swam a mile a night. Now I’m up to 220lbs and it feels uncomfortable. I need to find a happy medium!

I’ve been pondering the ‘12 hours’. I was working as a project manager in York for 2 years of my degree, travelling down to London 2 evenings a week and shoe-horning my reading into the train journeys and the spaces in between work and family. Now, with all the time in the world, I *must* read more!

Remember: only protest about tasteful subjects - and only when appropriate.

Death isn’t a very nice subject - and you’ve made your point, so please stop.

I still struggle to understand the point you’re making.

Teaching through discussion is brilliant. I’ve done it as a trainer and as an elementary school teacher. I’ve facilitated lots of meetings where we’ve achieved the aim though unexpected discussion.

But irrelevant side chatter is just rude.

This lurid headline is about British tourists no longer getting away with overstaying in Schengen. Or being 'illegals', as it's often called in the UK.

But we’ve moved into a political world where the meaning of words doesn’t matter, where the truth doesn’t matter. I don’t think she believes this; it’s about the visceral effect it creates in people who’re not thinking about the content of speeches. She could bark and miaow and have the same impact.

My English degree, which I took at 40 instead of opting for a Master’s in Organisational Development, was extremely valuable to my subsequent career: it made words my weapons.

My friend’s son, reading Philosophy at UCL, is being wooed by the legal profession, who value the mental training it gives.

I’m interested that you should respond in such an intemperate way. As an arsehole, I do quite a lot of it here on Bluesky.

Looking at what I’ve said in three more posts, do you still think I shouldn’t have been a teacher? My pupils, employers and colleagues thought I was okay.

Have a good day 👋🏼

I don’t have a profession now that I’ve retired, but I’ve had a fair few jobs, including as a trainer and meeting facilitator. I retrained as a teacher and taught for ten years.

Adults in meetings or training shouldn’t have side conversations that interfere with the main discussion or presentation.
