Sort of a geologist.
Forgive me while I step outside the bit for a moment:

David Mitchell wrote fun history of the British monarchy called Unruly. I can't say if it's the best history book, but the audiobook (read by Mitchell) is a lot of fun. Sometimes when I need a break, I'll listen to him joke about some royals.

Do you think he requested that book of accomplishments, or does his staff just know that he needs a stack of big-print validation, held together by a deadly binder clip?

How does that work?

"Minor electrical issue" they said. Make sense; you're going to knock some wires loose while you're trying to free a man who has his arms stuck in the airplane toilet.

Purity of Essence is a much more principled stance than I’m going to start a war because I didn't win a prize.

2. "Always a hoot."

Jerry Garcia's last words to Bob Weir, spoken just after the last Grateful Dead show (Soldier Field, 7/9/95). That's a fine a fine sentiment. As I get older I think more about stuff like this. How do I live so that I when I check out I leave behind some good?

Every night for the last year, I fall asleep mumbling "if Obama had done that...if biden had even thought of it, he'd be hanged" like Milton from Office Space.

(Don't get me wrong, the whole post is very good. But these tags!)

By the time their legs are long enough to keep up, they don't want to be anywhere near you. The whole project needed a couple more rounds of optimization.

This always feels nice but it makes bandages from the health packs I pick all soggy. :-(

There's a whole idea in some circles that the very idea of empathy is toxic. Some of it is making a fine distinction between empathy and sympathy, but I find it pretty dumb.

Just to clarify, the way to tell if something "matters" is its influence on public opinion? If so, then yeah, this seems right. I hate it, but it tracks.

I still think careful reporting and documenting what happened matters. But not in the same way.

I'm not opposed to this, but yeah, more emphasis on discovery would be welcome. I guess I'm not too mad about this because in some/many cases, processing is the obstacle to developing some deposits. interesting that senators from NV and UT are cosponsors; both have engineering depts at their Univs.
