I'm not a US citizen and live in the UK, but the US is the tinder-box for the rest of the world - so from my distant skin-in-the-game - I'd agree that Newsom is a step back to an old kind of oligarchic hegemony - the kleptocracy but without the swastikas.

Nobody wants to be proved right about any of this, but what Miller, Vought and others in Trump's circle saw as legal/constitutional opportunities with unchecked executive power could easily - perhaps more easily - happen here.
