Teaching a philosophy seminar feels like an elaborate magic trick, where you get people to talk and ask questions, and if you pull it off, a learning outcome seems to appear out of thin air

if you’re a researcher into extremism, conspiracism and disinformation but you feel you’re above “distractions” like racism, misogyny, anti-queer ideologies etc, then you’re not actually doing the job. unfortunately those are animating forces behind the movements you’re supposed to be analyzing!

Extra baffling because observing correlations between circumstances and behaviour is literally the only way we can learn to interpret animal behaviour at all. There is no independently verified dog language cheat sheet, all our knowledge is based on contextual observation

bro are you a homeostatic property cluster? because you are naturally kind

This is great news. An institution that prides itself in creating an excellent environment for education and personal growth for some should not be invested in taking this right away from others forever, whether through wars, occupation, or the climate crisis. I hope others will follow this example!

Ethics people and puzzle enthusiasts, I need help. A puzzle I bought at the charity shop is missing a piece, do I re-donate it, knowing full well that someone might have an unsatisfying experience but maybe helping dying children a little, or do I throw it out?

Brb, I just need to stare at the ceiling for a little while
The ceiling of King's College Chapel in candlelight.

I'm glad to hear, and happy I got you interested in reading some philosophy of chemistry! 😊
marabelceline.bsky.social
I am arguing that the assignment doesn't make sense in the first place, not that it is or isn't.
marabelceline.bsky.social
This intuition (and the opposite, namely chemists saying that this doesn't make sense) is precisely what I'm addressing in the paper!
marabelceline.bsky.social
Yes of course it is. I'm not sure why that would be confusing?

(2) there is certainly a point to be made about isolation being perceived as a step away from nature in a similar but perhaps less pronounced way as synthesis, I think some the other papers in this (fantastic!) volume bring these nuances out very nicely
marabelceline.bsky.social
You are right, I focus on chemicals in isolation for the purpose of this discussion, but I don't think my argument hinges on that. I am arguing that synthesis (and not isolation) is what makes a sample synthetic as opposed to natural, so it does not make a difference what system it is in

Thank you, that's very helpful. To be honest, I don't quite know what I would like to happen (or even what could plausibly happen) with the paper. But I don't mind alterations, and any commercial use that I would object to seems pretty unlikely anyway, so I decided to go with CC-BY.
marabelceline.bsky.social
Does it make any practical difference whether I choose a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC-ND copyright licence for publishing a philosophy paper? Which one would you recommend?

Academic publishing is such a scam. Babe I just wrote you a chapter for free and now I am also ... copy editing it for free. And I will make zero monies from this. Cool cool cool cool. Well at least the book will be affordable and lots of people can read it? Wait I am getting some information...

Me navigating an illegible verbal labyrinth of my own doing: Well this fucking sucks. What the fuck.

Couldn't be me. If your paper has a fun title, I'll find a reason to cite you
lastpositivist.bsky.social
One thing yinz should all know is whenever you write a title of the form <Catchy Phrase> [colon] <Description Of What The Paper is About> I reserve the right to decide whether or not the phrase following the colon is interesting or informative enough to be worth the aesthetic cost to my bibliography

Oof that sucks. I bought this one in a museum giftshop, I guess they're everywhere. The cover art does seems human made and the artist listed on the back is definitely a real person, but everything inside is clearly AI.
