We are all Dr. Brunkow 😴
“Dr. Brunkow said she did not expect to win a Nobel Prize. ‘My phone rang, and I saw a number from Sweden and thought, well that’s just spam of some sort, so I disabled the phone and went back to sleep,’“ www.nytimes.com/2025/10/06/h...

One thing that comforts me in the current era is that, despite everything, really cool science continues to be published:

www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

This could be a breakthrough for managing so many autoimmune diseases (still, in mice—don't get too excited).
Adenosine 2A receptor–dependent activation of AMPK represses TH17 cell pathogenicity through epigenetic and metabolic reprogramming
Epigenetic reprogramming that promotes oxidative metabolism suppresses TH17 cell pathogenicity.

A comparison of mouse vs human tumor microenvironments shows a major difference.

Mouse TMEs have more macrophages, while human TMEs have more T cells.

Chemokine expression patterns are also different.

Can we use what we’ve learned so far about #immunometabolism in macrophages and neutrophils as cancer immunotherapy? Not yet, but someday. I’m happy to share our latest review, summarizing the state of the field in the context of #myeloidcells and #lungcancer

Attending the Carrie and Lowell tour on the eve of Mother’s Day 2015 in New Orleans is still one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen and truly a formative experience in my life 💕 thank you Sufjan

P-hacking

Removing outliers, using alternative statistical methods and running extra experiments are some methods that could be used to change the P-value. Be careful not to fall in this trap! Stay sceptical! Null results are a normal part of science.

I’m a US citizen living and working in Europe as a scientific researcher, and I told my partner last night that we should avoid going back at all costs. This was before the news of a French researcher being detained came out. It sucks because I miss my family, I guess they should come here

Reviewers! Your job is to improve the scientific quality and integrity of a paper and make suggestions to solidify conclusions, not to gatekeep and make authors jump through unnecessary hoops to reach some invisible bar you’ve set in order to stroke your ego! we’ve all got it tough, don’t make worse

And yesterday I got an email from the university that some of the benefits I was apparently owed from 2024 weren’t paid correctly, so I’ll randomly get an extra fee from them. Such a stark contrast of what I’m used to in the States

My favorite part about living in Austria is that at random times I’ll get a letter saying “oops we owe you money!” from the electric company, employer, landlord, etc. My landlord randomly lowered my rent by €50/month and then sent me back the difference. Jarring as an American (in a good way)
