Dean Karlan's job at USAID was LITERALLY to improve the efficiency of its programs.

DOGE is clearly not actually after cutting fraud and waste. And its actions will clearly make the US weaker while also making the world a worse place.

Why Dean Karlan, chief economist of USAID, resigned on Tuesday
He was hired in 2022 so the aid agency could get 'more bang for our buck' with its projects. He tried to reach out to help in the rebuilding of the agency. On Tuesday he tendered his resignation.

GDP is everywhere in development. But in Zambia in 2010, the national accounts were prepared by just one (1!) person. How much can we trust developing country GDP?

A 🧵 and post on Morten Jerven's 2013 classic, Poor Numbers, on how African GDP is actually made—

We still have a relatively poor understanding of the relationship between evidence and policy. Program evaluation in particular is often motivated by a desire to make policy better. But how effective is program evaluation itself?Michelle Rao's JMP tackles this question. www.michellerao.com/research

I spoke with @aljazeera.com about the economic effects of the mass deportation of unauthorized and authorized immigrants proposed for next year

Americans can expect reduced employment, reduced economic growth, and higher inflation

How will Trump’s plans to deport undocumented migrants impact US economy?
Studies show Trump policies would cause ‘significant tightening in the already-tight job market’, hurting many sectors.

Papers written by non-white economists receive 5.1% to 9.6% fewer citations than those written by white economists.

This disparity is not attributable to differences in research quality, author ability, or visibility.

However, this racial gap has declined by quite a bit in recent years.
