🚨5 yrs ago, care workers were hailed as heroes. Promises were made better pay, safe staffing, protections.

Today? UNI´s report—with responses from 11,233 workers across 63 countries—exposes a care system in freefall. #CareCantWait

No joke, the Continent is publishing the best coverage of the DRC right now. And you can have it sent to you for free on WhatsApp and Signal!

All Protocol Observed

Welcome to Issue 189 of The Continent.

M23 fighters are marching on to take a second city in the DRC. The Tanzanian president is hosting a leader’s conference to address the crisis. But Tanzania is not a disinterested party.

Read it here: bit.ly/TheContinent...
The cover of issue 189 of The Continent is illustrated by cartoonist Gado. It's a send-up of the infamous Berlin Conference of 1884 which carved Africa amongst thee European powers. Instead of Africa being carved up however, it's the Democratic Republic of Congo being carved up amongst the leaders from the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) who are meeting in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. At the head of the table is Tanzanian president Samia Suluhu Hassan. They are meeting to discuss the conflict between the DRC government and Rwandan-backed M23 soldiers.

It's depressing following the news around #USAID & it makes me wonder...with the far-right rising in Europe, will we be seeing a similar situation play out with European aid & development funding, including for European CSOs. E.g. see this news from last year: www.politico.eu/article/fear...
Massive EU funding cut looms for health NGOs
NGOs have been briefed that grants will be cut by 50 percent.

This reminds me of a Portuguese author I love saying how she usually reads drafts of her books to hear friends to "test the rhythm" of the writing.

Yes, audiobooks are (another type of) reading 🙂

A surprisingly fun exercise: I went on Chat GPT to test the results on street vendors & food sovereignty, to try to understand what might come up and if it supported our views. The results were...actually kinda great? Which means there is enough content out there about this to feed the algorithm

It is a relief to know that our ancestors were worriers — awake in the darkness with crowded minds. Their worry is why we’re here.

Word of the Day is ‘uhtcearu’ [ucht-kay-aru, with the 'ch' as in the Scottish ‘loch']:

Old English for ‘the sorrow before dawn', when you lie awake in the darkness and worries crowd your mind.
