With the large number of new followers, high time for a (re)introduction! I study how authoritarian states try to shape and control information, especially online, as well as the role that online platforms play in facilitating, implementing or countering censorship and propaganda. #commsky #polsky

Meta’s decision to ban ads about politics, elections, and social issues on their platforms like Facebook and Instagram in the EU is now implemented.

This is the new policy. Any ad about fx elections, civil rights, economy, health, climate, immigration, or foreign policy is now (presumably) banned.

Depressing news. 10 years ago, Russian scientists were massively incentivised to collaborate internationally and publish in English. Current situation is the direct opposite. Control over international contacts has been there for much longer of course, but this is a final blow for academic freedom.

Putin signed a law that allows the FSB to control who Russian scientists and researchers talk to, where they travel and etc.
Not that they didn't do that before but this opens up a way for greater repressions against disloyal or whoever talked to "bad foreigner" via zoom
