Which is horrible and unforgivable enough! But they are still different stories. Which is why I wish I knew more about attempted genocides that found off-ramps. How much more often is that the case? Are there indicators correlated with that? Not to justify complacency, but to avoid doomerism.

Because yes, this is the familiar beginning of the story of a completed genocide. But it’s also the familiar middle of the United States’ story of increased acceptance of gender and sexual minorities followed by vicious backlash.

Officials who control federal and a number of state monopolies on violence and public health agencies want trans people to disappear. How likely are they to achieve that demonic (in the Christian sense of the word) goal, in whole or in part? I don’t know how to answer that question.

Extralegal anti-trans violence is also not new. (How much it’s an evolution of gay-bashing vs its own thing, I can’t say. I know lots about religious queerphobia, less about street violence.) The assaulters are emboldened, but, I don’t know if their hate or taste for violence has escalated.

Anti-trans gov’t action today feels less a function of escalated disgust or rhetoric, and more a function of white evangelical capture of state governments, Congress, and the executive branch.

(With an assist from conservative Catholic capture of the Supreme Court.)
