Say hello to literally the only protesters outside Tory conference this year
Two protesters holding up a sign saying “pedestrianise the M6”

Oops! I hadn't added Purple Sandpiper to my year list, so it's actually now 204. Seven needed to set a new record. 😛

Lovely views of the first winter male Siberian Thrush as it feasted on elderberries at Asta, Shetland this afternoon.

From northern Fennoscandia (and Russia) with love.

Nice to see my first migrant Jack Snipe of the Autumn here in Shetland.

In typical habitat and in a typical pose. Amazing birds.

🐦‍⬛ It's been an enthralling week on Shetland (photo is of Esha Ness) thanks to Shetland Wildlife and our excellent guide Dave Fairhurst. I managed 96 bird species, two of them 'lifers' (Common Rosefinch, Siberian Thrush), and my year list is up to 203. My personal highlight was the young Bluethroat.

Record shot of a very elusive Siberian Thrush at Scalloway today. #birds #ukbirding #shetlandbirds

🐦‍⬛ Shetland, Day 7: Great Northern Diver off Scousburgh Sands, better (though far from perfect) views of the Siberian Thrush near Scalloway, a hunkered-down Jack Snipe at Noss Farm, and finally at Grutness (pictured) a Common Rosefinch, Brambling, Siskins, an Eider and two Purple Sandpipers.

🐦‍⬛ Shetland Day 6: we joined the mass 'twitch' (pictured) north of Scalloway for the notoriously skulking (and very rare) Siberian Thrush; I managed two brief sightings in two hours. Later, we found the drake Ring-necked Duck on Tingwall Loch, then some Red Grouse and a Mountain Hare near Girlsta.

Snowball! Our Autumn birding group enjoyed lovely views of this beautiful Hornemann's Arctic Redpoll at Vaylie, Unst yesterday. Thanks to our good friend Rich Andrews @mrbristolian.bsky.social for the pic.

🐦‍⬛🦦 Shetland, Day 5: a wet and windy day started with two Otters in the bay off Hillswick, then the Sullem plantation yielded a Pied Flycatcher. On Yell, a bedraggled Short-toed Lark eventually showed itself near Otterswick, and Golden Plovers flocked at West Sandwick (pictured).

That is now 14 home league wins in 60. SIXTY. And to be honest if you'd seen us play over the last 3yrs you'd be amazed it was that many.

🐦‍⬛ Shetland, Day 4: north to Unst, the fields at Norwick (pictured) drawing in various seed-eaters including a Common Rosefinch (life ✅️ 😃), Twites, Redpolls (one a striking Arctic bird 😲), Siskin and Tree Sparrow. Also Great Skuas and fishing Gannets at Hermaness, a roving Glossy Ibis at Haroldswick.

🐦‍⬛ Shetland, Day 3: sunny south Mainland delivered two Sanderling and Bar-tailed Godwit at Pool of Virkie, three smart Curlew Sandpiper, Grey Plover and a dashing Merlin at Scatness (pictured), Common Redstart on Mossy Hill, then Kittiwakes, Black Guillemots and Razorbill from Levenwick Beach.

🐦‍⬛ Shetland, Day 2: three Great Northern Divers and Arctic Tern at Bay of Quendale (pictured), Little Bunting, two Brambling and Red-breasted Flycatcher at Hillwell, Pink-footed Geese and Scaup at Loch of Spiggie, topped off with my first Bluethroat since 1971, a stunning bird in a Geosetter garden.

Nothing yet. Maybe the new guy, after watching today's performance, realised he'd be on a hiding to nothing and baled.

🐦‍⬛ Shetland, Day 1: a blustery afternoon on southern Mainland yielded a Pied Flycatcher, Hooded Crows and Golden Plovers around Quendale, several Whooper Swans at Loch of Spiggie (pictured) then, at Geosetter, a showy Yellow-browed Warbler (likely two birds) in the willows with other leaf warblers.

🍺 Howff, Aberdeen: another basement bar, this one fresh into the Good Beer Guide, and nicely carpeted. A group of guys drinking Tennent's are glued to the Ryder Cup on TV. I'm drinking Harviestoun again, the Citra Project a couple of notches up on their offering in the last place.
