Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

If you're at #COLM2025 on Friday Oct 10, I'll be giving an invited talk in the Workshop on the Application of LLM Explainability to Reasoning and Planning.

The title is: "Reasoning, Explanation, and Human-Centered AI".

Below I have tentatively diagrammed the flow of my talk.

Please, just stop sending me AI videos of Dad. Stop believing I wanna see it or that I'll understand, I don't and I won't. If you're just trying to troll me, I've seen way worse, i'll restrict and move on. But please, if you've got any decency, just stop doing this to him and to me, to everyone even, full stop. It's dumb, it's a waste of time and energy, and believe me, it's NOT what he'd want.
To watch the legacies of real people be condensed down to 'this vaguely looks and sounds like them so that's enough,
, just so
other people can churn out horrible TikTok slop puppeteering them is maddening. You're not making art, you're making disgusting, over-processed hotdogs out of the lives of human beings, out of the history of art and music, and then shoving them down someone else's throat hoping they'll give you a little thumbs up and like it.
Gross. And for the love of EVERYTHING, stop calling it 'the future. Al is just badly recycling and regurgitating the past to be reconsumed. You are taking in the Human Centipede of content, and from the very very end of the line, all while the folks at the front laugh and laugh, consume and consume.

Finally had to upgrade my iPhone to the version with the Liquid Glass UI. I appreciate the Apple UI team’s gradual evolution from “too many notifications” to “too many notifications but now you can’t read them”

#COLM2025 is starting. Find @glennmatlin.bsky.social to learn about why LLMs kinda, sorta, but don't really understand psychological suspense in stories.
markriedl.bsky.social
Our work on Detecting Suspense in Stories will appear at COLM'25 arxiv.org/abs/2508.15794

Do LLMs know when stories are suspenseful?

We ran LLMs through a bunch of classical psychology suspense studies

The answer: kinda, sorta? Honestly, better than I expected. But the results are nuanced...

In non-LLM AI news, Waymo has quietly been involved in two fatal car crashes in 2025. Phil Koopman details that this fatality rate is now comparable to humans.

Waymo: 5/billion miles in geofenced conditions

I once sat on an airplane next to someone doing "responsible AI" online training. I couldn't help look at their laptop screen. Nothing was wrong per se, but it was some amazingly vacuous bullet points. I was screaming inside the entire time.
