Now on FirstView ft. @marniehowlett.bsky.social and @lkonken.bsky.social.

How can we as a profession address that our "homes" and "fields" are not distinct and separate, especially with the rise of virtual and digital research methods?

Given the growing use of remote and online methods, we argue that the discipline of political science must account more seriously for the muddling of our homes and fields to support rigorous, transparent, and ethical empirical research.
marniehowlett.bsky.social
We contend that the overlap of our homes and fields in digital fieldwork poses different challenges for our professional boundaries than offline research, particularly in terms of separating our personal and research lives, mitigating risk, and protecting our mental health.

The war took two loved ones from her, and after that, she went to the front herself. “Chaika” is a drone operator with the Stryzh team of the Ukrainian Volunteer Army. She joined the unit this year and has put all plans for civilian life on hold until victory.

a very interesting paper on secondary internal displacement in #Ukraine "... trauma may encourage agency, resilience, and new opportunities for self-expression among twice displaced populations"
marniehowlett.bsky.social
So thrilled to see this paper coauthored with Daryna Dvornichenko published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies (JEMS)!

Drawing on 30 original interviews, we examine how Ukrainian women internally displaced twice because of Russia’s war against Ukraine understand and relate to “home.”

The paper moreover highlights acute grassroots implications of Russia’s war against Ukraine and challenges for social cohesion to be addressed going forward.
marniehowlett.bsky.social
As the first study exploring twice internally displaced women’s relationships with ‘home’ – in Ukraine and globally – the paper pushes forward our understanding of secondary internal displacement and the experiences of women forced to rebuild their lives a second time.
marniehowlett.bsky.social
We show that, for twice internally Ukrainian displaced women, ‘home’ represents lost physical places, severed social ties, and a feeling they have or seek to (re)establish.
