Instead of all these tragedies around the world having to compete against each other, I hope the day will come when victims are no longer turned into objects for comparison and hierarchical ranking.

What strikes me at International Studies conferences this year is how little is said about Ukraine. In a trend-driven academia, Ukraine has been relegated to an ‘anti-trend’ - too enduring, too inconvenient and displaced by flashier tragedies that check more theoretical boxes.
