After clashing with Maurice Glasman recently, I've come to realise just how pernicious he and his Blue Labour movement are. We could discuss his chumminess with Steve Bannon and JD Vance, endless pandering to the far right and evident hatred of the Labour left. But there's something even worse. 🧵

Well worth reading, but understates the contradictions in Starmer’s position, failing to discuss how he has actively collaborated with Israel’s campaign in Gaza (eg RAF), continuing to treat it as a close military and political ally; and the fact that he, Lammy & Hermer clearly do know it’s genocide

Many media outlets are now recognising that Israel is committing genocide - but still not identifying what governments should be doing to stop it. Me on the new stage of denial.

The dam of Gaza genocide denial has well and truly broken. While Israel’s supporters in the West still reject the charge, many media outlets are now coming off the fence.

Genocide scholar @martinshaw.bsky.social reflects on this shift for @newlinesmag.bsky.social.

The Dam of Gaza Genocide Denial Has Broken
Several prominent media outlets are coming off the fence over Israel’s actions, but a conspiracy of helplessness still prevails

Remembering Srebrenica must go hand in hand with opposing the genocide in Gaza, I argue in this new article. The one cannot be used to deny the other.

This is a good piece on how Blue Labour has turned MAGA, but it overlooks the clue in the original naming: ‘blue’ meant ‘conservative’ and BL has shared in the general deformation of conservativism in the last decade.

It's time to abolish the Home Office.

It is not fit for purpose & has totally lost the trust of every stakeholder it serves - We knew that already.

So I looked into how it could practically be done for

Keir Starmer: ‘We’ve always been clear that Israel must abide by international law’. So why don’t you condemn its illegal aggression like you condemned Russia’s? Which part of international law can it be credibly said that Israel *is* complying with?

At this even more dangerous moment in the Gaza genocide, I’m looking forward to being part of this @icjpalestine.com event in London, alongside many speakers with so much to contribute. An opportunity to talk about where the global fight back goes now.

Keir Starmer’s commitment to upholding international human rights law doesn’t appear to extend to the Israeli Government, argues @martinshaw.bsky.social

While making the case for sanctions, the FT still perpetuates the myths that Israel’s existence is threatened and that it could be fighting legally. On the latter, see Adil Haque’s argument that its war is illegal in its entirety:

Yet he failed to mention Gaza, over which his government has explicitly argued for bypassing IHL (the F-35 parts case), ignored the ICJ’s genocide warning, and denies the overwhelming arguments that Israel is committing it, making the UK potentially complicit (a crime under the Genocide Convention).

A coded criticism of Starmer’s policy on Gaza, or yet another example of the Labour government’s doublespeak? - Pick-and-mix approach to international law will make UK less secure, says attorney general.

‘Crash’.

He'll go to prison and the far right will be agitating for his release instantly.

Let justice do its thing.

It won't be like that. At all.

And it wasn't a crash fgs. Up your game BBC.

I wonder how many children in Gaza are writing their diaries, and whether EU politicians will hold these up for the attention of European society. ‘Never, never again’? It’s happening now and you are enabling it.

"A painful reminder to Europe to be vigilant and unyielding towards all those who see hatred and want to divide our society"

"Europe knows this path all too well. And never, never again must we embark on this path"

Jeremy gets the main arguments just right, but by emphasising the origins of Blue Labour, misses Glasman's recent pivot to the far right, openly collaborating with Tories, Reform and Trumpians. Blue has become Turquoise Labour, if indeed there's much Labour left in it.

Mehdi is right: almost all of us who work on genocide now agree that Israel is committing it on Gaza. I came to that conclusion in October 2023, when it was already clear that they intended to destroy and kill on a massive scale. Sadly, everything they have done since has confirmed that I was right.

"Apologists for Israel might want to reject the charge of genocide [and] suggest its hyperbole or even antisemitic, but the actual experts on genocide know a genocide when they see one - and they see one in Gaza."

My receipts on all the experts who say Gaza *is* a genocide.
