Today’s poem is dedicated to all those who have taken it upon themselves to correct the grammar or spelling in my poems over the last few weeks.

It’s called ‘Pedents’.
Pedents   Foot soldiers in the War on Error, They’re here to save us from ourselves, With Fowler’s Modern English Usage (first edition, nineteen twelve).   They scrutinise each word we write For typos, gaffes, et cetera, Correcting all our dumb mistakes To make our grammar betterer.   They sigh and tut and tell us off For the rules we have forsaken And chart this nation’s steep decline By the care we should of taken.   Custodians of the King’s English, They merely serve to keep it pure And restrict, they hope, the ignorant To three mistakes or less.   In doing so, they hold no fear they will deprive a thing of life: for it’s not important what is said, what matters is that its right. Today’s poem is called ‘Black Friday’.
Black Friday   Few knew what lay in store that Friday.   It started, as these things always do, with the haberdashers, where reckless price slashers offered ten per cent off cerise beading trimming. Soon the place was full to brimming   and as the prices lowered, the tension rose resulting in a bloodied nose by the children’s clothes. In Winter Wear, customers turned to scufflers over discounted mufflers, and there was more fighting among the Table Lighting where one shopper got lamped, then put in the shade.   There was carnage by the cardigans, burnings in Home Furnishings, a fracas near the nail lacquer, not to mention the infamous mascara massacre. In Luggage, where somebody leaked mustard gas, the worst case scenario came to pass.   Thirty-five shoppers lost their lives in the fray – casualties of consumerism, malled to death, lest we forget, on Black Friday.   Brian Bilston

Today’s poem is called ‘The Importance of the Oxford Comma’.
The Importance of the Oxford Comma   Owing to ambiguities caused by its omission, the Oxford comma was the subject of a petition raised by serious serialists keen to ensure its mandatory use in lists of three things or more.   And what a response! From across every nation, the signatures poured in beyond all expectation – from the investment bankers, robbers and thieves, to the politicians, self-servers and exponents of sleaze.   There were the Daily Mail readers, the clowns and deluded; the climate change deniers, the daft and the stupid; the morally bankrupt, Donald Trump and Piers Morgan; Elon Musk, a Bond villain and a trafficker of organs;   plus the poets, the drug fiends and chronically poor – all supported this change to grammatical law. This formal petition was then presented in hope to Sir David Attenborough, the King and the Pope. Brian Bilston
