I'm dead inside but my body keeps moving. Critical of the State of Alabama; it's awful. Videographer, artist, and programmer. Unemployable cripple and monster.
And the "Correct" figure is arranged as it is otherwise packed from the factory and the cable is a bit more cooperative at several points in that position. However, even the one I rewired a bit funky did pass all tests and function with little visible gap in the controller frame seam.

As a side note, even the "wrong" arrangement of the external cable is still workable. You just may have to use a screwdriver to tuck the wire in just sort of under the inner lip of the outer casing. Flathead screwdriver can do it, just get a very thin blade of low diameter. But it's annoying to work

Actually, are those even capacitors? They have three feet so they might be... I dunno, maybe transistors(?). I'm just not entirely sure, but I do know that it seems like it would be bad to have them touching the analog stick cables, and having them in such a position may have caused weird problems.

Now I'm cleaning up the SDC for the ED64p. Might also plunk a directory of NES ROMs on there to see if those work. Looks like there's an emulator for it in the firmware set I installed on the thing so I guess I'll take it for a spin.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it is. I haven't even seen the supposed mod with my own eyes, tbh. I'm just going by the verbiage written on a note included with the console, which said it could play both NA and JP games. Haven't even tested that extensively since it's sort of irrelevant in this case.

Though I'll also probably get a different HDMI adapter as well since I saw one that doesn't need USB power. Might be less dodgy than this irritating thing I've been using.

Interesting. I fear that next Tuesday will be a little late bc I gotta give this thing over by Friday but I'll take note of that. Seems like these consoles are your specialty so that gives me some confidence over this one, which was an anonymous Amazon refurb w/ unexpected mod chip to play JP stuff.

I juggled the HDMI doohickey and replugged it and the N64 rose back from the dead. It's entirely possible that this HDMI adapter is to blame for this bullshit. Might snap up a different one that I had my eye on, but just in case I'm also gonna look for a fresh N64 maybe from a better vendor.

Yeah, I got all four of them back together. No sweat there. They work. I was able to get the N64 to cooperate once I doofed with the HDMI adapter a little bit, so that might actually be the problem point (or it could just be another problem point, I don't really know and don't have time to find out)

Alas, when I went to test my problems came home to roost. The cracked solder joint is now a permanent problem. Can't get the machine to boot at all. Go figure this happens at the 11th hour. Godammit!
Now I have to find another N64 that will actually work. This fucking sucks.

This time around I tried to keep the analog stick cables away from the inconveniently placed capacitors. Did you know those caps come in two varieties?
