Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

Random musing on detransition narratives
Random musing, not a final thought, but—I’ve been wondering how much the word “detransition” exists mainly to Other trans bodies. For many detransitioners, even and perhaps especially those who aren’t doing so for safety or political reasons but to reaffirm a gender identity they once claimed, they’re still transitioning. The self they “return” to is never the exact self they had before; even the act of exploring other gender expressions changes you. You come back with more knowledge, and hopefully more clarity of self. Like all of us, they’ve moved through different ways of being. We can never return to a past, only move forward as a synthesis of these explorations. But the “detransitioner” narratives weaponized by anti-trans politics cling to the idea of an “original” identity that is ruined by transition—usually framed around medical changes like HRT or surgery—to claim that gender-affirming care is harmful because it breaks some imagined natural state that a detrantioner can never return to now because they have been “tricked” intro transition. Yet no one can ever return to an untouched original self. We all change. We all move forward, not back. The real issue facing many“detransitioners” is often a material one: they often step away from transition because the path offered to them didn’t fit. Instead of being supported in exploring their own terms, many were handed a narrow, binary script of how we think of gender affirming care (get top surgery, start hrt, wear these clothes to affirm your gender). Our culture loves to prescribe identities, not enable people to discover them. Have you ever heard of the term "Luddite" from an elder?
Stanhill, Lancashire, 1764. Wear and carpenter James Hargreaves invents the Spinning Jenny, the first practical spinning-frame, to make the tedious task of producing cloth a little bit faster. He doesn't know it yet, but this will destroy the world. Spurred by inventions like his, the industrial revolution will transform everything -- work power, the wealth of nations. Society as we know it began here, and it wasn't great for everyone. But a group of weavers and textile workers saw this future coming. And did their best to prevent it. "Curse you spinning jenny, you ruined everything!" The standard narrative does that LUDDITES were foolish lunatics who, in fear of technology, decided progress was bad, and started hitting it with sticks. But the truth is entire ways of life were being destroyed. Previously, skilled craftsmen were respected for the time and effort it took to do their work. The entire family usit would form a cottage industry - creating something valuable, and command a decent living. But when a machine can work 10 times faster its owner can charge less for the prodcts- craftsmen couldn't compete and were left out of work almost overnight. And as factories became a fixture of the british landscape, these now unemployed labourers often ended up working the factories that had just destroyed their way of life. Britain was the most prosperous nation in history, factory owners became extremely wealthy and influential. But the people doing the actual work saw almost none of it. Factory work paid little, since "the machines" did "the real work" human labourers were deemed unimportant and replaceable. FUN FACT!: Factory owners preferred to hire ORPHANS since less people would notice if they were maimed or killed on the job! Now the owners quickly realized the workers might notice they did all the work for almost no pay. If they went on STRIKE or ARGUED FOR HGHER WAGES, this would threaten their tremendous wealth. In 1799, Parliament passed the Combination Act, which made FORMING TRADE UNIONS, COLLECTIVE BARGAINING, AND GOING ON STRIKE ILLEGAL. Organizing against the rich became a crime. If you were living through it, opposing the industrial revolution wasn't techno-phobia. It was SELF-DEFENSE. The combination act forced unions underground into secret societies. And the greatest secret of all was their leader - Ned Ludd. Ned had been a folk character for years. In one version after being whipped by his master, he smashed two knitting frames in a rage. In more fanciful versions, he then escaped to the Sherwood forest, here he lived among the animals as their king. Some versions specifically call him 'Much Better Than Robin Hood'.

Writing something up
I don’t endorse extrajudicial murder, especially as it looks like it will be used to justify further harm on trans people and others. And I’d be lying if I said there isn’t a part of me, watching a video of a man bleeding out on social media, that feels some measure of empathy—even though that man would have gleefully watched me die the same way, and in fact actively campaigned for it, for all trans people, institutionally and personally. But I don’t feel sadness. The world is better without him in it—even if I wouldn’t have chosen the way he went, I won’t shed a tear for a man who dedicated his life to making mine shorter. He was a Nazi in a nice suit, and the only thing respectable about him now is the silence he finally left behind. What’s enraging is watching the political establishment scramble to lionize him. Not just Trump and his cronies trying to build a martyr out of a Nazi, but mainstream figures too: Ezra Klein praising him for “doing politics the right way,” Gavin Newsom saying we should “honor Charlie’s memory” by continuing his “good-faith debate.” Fuck off. The only reason you can say that is because Kirk played his bigoted game in a suit, looking respectable while calling for the imprisonment and eradication of Muslims, Jews, trans people, queer folks, the homeless, women, BIPOC, everyone who didn’t fit his fascist vision. Meanwhile, anyone who so much as acknowledges that Kirk was “controversial” loses their jobs. MSNBC’s Matthew Dowd got canned. Trans writer Gretchen Felker-Martin lost her Red Hood comic for making the exact kind of biting joke that’s her entire career—she literally wrote Manhunt, a book where TERFs get murdered in an apocalypse. Even I, for simply posting on Bluesky that I “dishonor” Charlie Kirk’s memory by living my life joyously, got flagged and briefly censored for being “rude.” That’s the rot of “centrism”: pretending to hold the middle ground while tilting the scales in fascism’s favor.
