Our last study on the cover of Ecology 🐹❄️
esajournals.bsky.social
Say hello to Ecology's October cover star! This lemming was photographed by @mathildepoirier.bsky.social during a study that explores how winter weather events like melt-freeze and rain-on-snow affect these Arctic critters

Excited to share our new paper in @esajournals.bsky.social Ecology! ❄️
Our 17-year study shows that even moderate winter events (rain-on-snow, melt-feeze) can negatively influence lemming winter reproduction and population growth. 🐹

Despite the many advantages of remote field monitoring, ecologists loose valuable insights as they spend less time in the field. Experiential knowledge gained through fieldwork or time spent on the land is essential for developing meaningful research hypotheses and enancing data interpretation. 🔬🌿

As a research ecologist, I believe spending time in the field is crucial for building solid hypotheses 🔍, interpreting data wisely 📊, fostering team spirit 🤝, staying fit 🏃‍♀️, reducing stress 😌, nurturing student interactions 👩‍🔬, and remembering why I do this job! 💡 lc.cx/m7tCnH
Ecologists are spending less time in the field. That could be a problem.

"One of the central contributions of Indigenous framings of ecological relations is the lack of separateness between social and natural contexts." Let's bridge knowledge systems through dialogue and mutual openness 🌱

Improved understanding of and collaborations with Indigenous sciences are in order to comprehend principles of Indigenous knowledge systems that promote ecological sustainability and foster multispecies coexistence.

Regarding wildlife, I am worried about increase in rain-on-snow events which increase snow hardness and could have several consequences on terrestrial mammals (movement, feeding, etc.). Also, decrease of period with snow cover reduces the availability of shelter for smaller ones. So much to explore!

Hello all! I’m a postdoc researcher working on snow-wildlife interactions. ❄️ My previous work focused on the impact of snow conditions on lemming populations, behavior and habitat use in the Arctic. 🐹 Currently starting new exciting projects in the boreal forest.🌲 Happy to connect with new people!
