there are always loads of free desks in the reading rooms. I’m there all the time.

It’s incredible to me the absolute dross that gets published as op-ed’s in the Guardian yet my pitch on one of the biggest scandals in our country regarding labour rights and rogue employers gets no response.

Why would you line up at 9am in front of the British Library? It’s not fucking Berghain.

Raf worked for a cafe chain popular with MPs & journalists. He won his case, but the company went insolvent. Then the directors reopened one of the branches

One of the directors wrote to him saying "go fck yourself" & he was glad he "didn't get a penny"

Whatsapp message from company director which says: "“Glad you didn’t get a penny from your claim as you don’t deserve fck all. I don’t appreciate the comments made about me in your statement and I wish you had the balls of a real man to say it to my face which you are not.
However being a 2 faced prick is a full time job which you have mastered. So go fck yourself.”

Rosie tried everything to get the £6,000 she was awarded. She even spoke to her MP & the employment minister - they didn't help.

Her boss has the cash. In videos he brags about his expensive cars & has a Rolex that's worth more than what he owes her.

This is a huge story.

Wage theft is rampant across the UK and the meagre legal protections meant to contest it are not even being enforced, with bosses laughing about how they just ignored judge’s rulings.

🚨 Our new investigation out today reveals how thousands of people who've taken their bosses to employment tribunals & won, never got paid, even after they approached the government for help.

This has serious implications for the Employment rights bill.

Thousands of rogue bosses get away with not paying tribunal awards
The government scheme ‘enforcing’ money owed to workers has been unsuccessful in a staggering three-quarters of cases

A great read on the Tony Blair Institute (TBI), whose last summer party was held at McKinsey's HQ and co-hosted by ex-McKinsey current chair of NHS England. It includes important info on the revolving door between this tech and petrostate-funded think tank and Starmer's government, including - 1/2

Illuminating read on the Tony Blair Institute: "an organisation unusually close to the British government, able to lobby ministers directly, and which holds joint retreats with Oracle and is willing to engage in “tech sales” with governments in the rest of the world."
Inside the Tony Blair Institute
Who really benefits from the former PM’s tech evangelism?

Cool, so what happens when they graduate and their access ends. All this is doing is turning students into a guaranteed revenue stream for the company.

Hard to overstate what a *huge* win this is for OpenAI in its strategy to spread its malign, brain- and planet-destroying tentacles all through the education sector. Oxford’s global standing will create a permission structure for many other schools to do likewise. “If Oxford’s doing it, then…”
Screenshot of a post University of Oxford stating that from now on all students and staff at Oxford will have free access to ChatGPT. The post claims that ChatGPT edu is “built for education with enhanced privacy and insecurity.“

Do you that this liberal outrage posting is going to change the overton window?

I see nothing wrong with the point the presenter is making.
mattcole.bsky.social
What an absolutely terrible decision.

NEW: Oxford will be the first UK university to give all staff and students free ChatGPT Edu access, from this academic year.

ChatGPT Edu is built for education, with enhanced privacy and security.
Graphic from the University of Oxford, featuring an image of a glowing, digital brain with the text: 'Generative AI at Oxford'. Highlights that ChatGPT Edu is now available to all staff and students. Includes a link for more information: ox.ac.uk/gen-ai

UK higher education is in a risky position.

In 2023-24, 732,285 students, or 23% of the total student population, were from overseas. Russell group unis take an increasing share of students.

With a lack of endowments and lack of government support, the sector could collapse.

Something about the way the retention of data has come to be seen as an absolute necessity. Retention of data to the exclusion of thinking, or the patterns of forgetting and remembering. Keep a seed bank, let the ecosystem die. Use and abuse of history for life.

this exists it is called thinking
Matthew McConaughey says he wants a private LLM, fed only with his books, notes, journals, and aspirations, so he can ask it questions and get answers based solely on that information, without any outside influence.

Zarah Sultana’s behaviour is looking increasingly like a public meltdown rather than a sectarian fight.

She’s taken unilateral action twice. The claims of either side don’t even matter because their actions euthanised our Party before it even started, making it the laughing stock of the right.
mattcole.bsky.social
Agreed, but that’s a reflection on his political nous.

Based on this row, the Greens are the only option now.
mattcole.bsky.social
He’s equally to blame.
mattcole.bsky.social
This person has just simultaneously destroyed whatever political credibility they might have had in their career and killed an emergent socialist movement in one fell swoop.

Well done. It’s fucking disgusting.
mattcole.bsky.social
Zarah & Corbyn imploding their own initiative before it even became a political movement did us all a favour.

Fuck that style of politics. It was never viable and died in 2019.

We need economic populism purged of the pathological tendencies of the old left - a socialism for normal people.

1 year exactly since the release of my debut book w/ @versobooks.bsky.social.
In February '24 I wrote down in my journal my goals for the release - audiences reached, countries travelled, connections made etc. This 1st year wildly exceeded all my expectations, I am so so grateful.
