1 year exactly since the release of my debut book w/ @versobooks.bsky.social.
In February '24 I wrote down in my journal my goals for the release - audiences reached, countries travelled, connections made etc. This 1st year wildly exceeded all my expectations, I am so so grateful.

What's next? 1/4

Similarly "phones" underemphasises the power of this device. They are "boundless multimedia machines" on which you can, yes, also make a phone call. Perhaps if rebranded similarly they'd be less likely to be given to 9yr olds etc.

when do we start using a term other than “social” media?

It was so clear to so many of us - ignored or ridiculed - the disastrous path we were on since 2008 (at the earliest). And here we are. We've arrived at our destination.

Mind Diver is such a unique experience, not just with the photogrammetry-style visuals, but also the storytelling and world building, both of which is so expertly crafted.
I recommend checking it out!

Gaming-Only journalists and analysts are pretty accurately calling this EA acquisition what it is: a doomed idea that will cause untold human misery and kill the company and probably bury all its IPs

Tech/Gaming Journalists keep trying to find a silver lining. Huh. Curious. Strange. Odd. Quirky.

🙋‍♀️ 2.5 months without a browser on my phone! Apart from an occasional QR code in restaurant faff I had zero needs / wants for it. Big recommend. 💪

Re: digital cleanse - Bluesky is the only social media app left on my phone. And 5 days ago I went one step further - deleted the browser off my phone. We'll see how long this experiment will last, but so far so good!

Implemented a self-hosted bridge between two programmes (with a lot of pain and swearing) - I might be a Woman in STEM. 💅

Some context for the EA deal, my 2023 piece on Saudi Arabia getting into gaming.

“Anywhere that Saudi Arabia is spending any amount of money lately, there are always strings attached. It’s never just a pure business investment."

Saudi Arabia’s plan to become the crown prince of gaming
With avowed “massive gamer” Mohammed bin Salman at the helm, the kingdom’s insatiable appetite and bottomless riches are already remaking the global video game industry.

The day Luigi Mangione was found and named the suspect, the Steam Community came together and did this. I know it's small in the grand scheme of things, but it's gestures like this that reaffirm to me how much, even just having possibly done something, that he became an immediate hero to the people.
Luigi Mangione 's Steam account Pep (short for his childhood nickname Pepperoni) received 2,986 awards and became a community contributor with a thank you message that people appreciate him.

CEO pay is up 1,094% since 1978, while worker pay is up just 26%.

Why do we always hear "we can't afford to pay our workers more" but never "we can't afford to pay our CEO more"?

Huge apols for another one re: Klein. The chat with Ta-Nehisi Coates sadly also felt weak. Ofc the latter technically right, but I wish the jugular had been touched - more universally egalitarian politics will be an opposition to fascism, not succumbing to it. Why is it still a hard point to make.

Driving didn’t “naturally” become inevitable. We designed a society that make driving inevitable in most places. We can design something different

i feel like we really need to appreciate the blindingly, hilariously obvious hypocrisy here. the contradictions are so out in the open now. and i know everyone's internalized that it doesn't seem to matter to the wealthy anymore, but it's also a huge mistake to not keep pointing these things out
