On the death of Frederick, Prince of Wales in 1751, a swathe of students and fellows of @ox.ac.uk composed verses of condolence, many in Latin and in English and a smattering in other languages. John Swinton MA of Christ Church showed off by offering two: one in Phoenician and the other in Etruscan.

I remember watching Doctor Who that day at family friends' house in Chester-le-Street. It was dropped in to a New Yeared Saturday schedule, the curtailed Grandstand and added family film being the most obvious changes.

Awful news from Wales, the St Fagan's Museum has been broken into and prehistoric goldwork has been taken. Its painful to think what objects might now be at risk. Thoughts with the museum team who must be devastated, all speed to the police and a curse on the crooks.

He's strikingly incapable of setting out *why* something is bad. Everything he writes is a search for labels that avoid having to make an argument - Reform's policies are 'racist', these protests are 'un-British'. You are the prime minister! Explain why they are wrong!

For the avoidance of doubt, if you have heard that Euan Blair’s company Multiverse has been awarded a govt contract to deliver the digital ID scheme, this is false.

The govt expects the ID scheme to be developed in house, though it is still in early stages and “no decisions” have been made

PRESERVING RARE FILMS

Television on film is often a curio in film collections. Film is Fabulous! are currently returning 350 silent films on nitrate to the Library of Congress in Washington DC, for identification and cataloguing. These films had been curated by a UK film (1/2)

That's interesting - I've gone to sleep after caffeinated drinks when one would expect the opposite.

I was polite about it in the ODNB article on Sweeney Todd (one of the mythical people passed off as historical sometimes, who crept in because people will look for them) which replaced one commissioned from Haining, but at best it's a self-conscious hoax with nods and winks to those in the know.
