My wife is from Hawaii and has a modest local accent. No one in the mainland U.S. thinks twice about it. We went to Scotland for her birthday a few years back and she was trying to buy some shoes. My wife couldn't understand the Scottish woman's brogue and vice versa. I had to translate.
