I have a phone full of photos I’m sort of proud of, and a year’s worth of adventures I haven’t really posted anywhere, so I’m going to semi-randomly try to post one a day through the end of the year to this thread.

Today: Ballachulish, Scotland, in May, while hiking the West Highland Way.
An old Scottish hotel at the side of a loch.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

I appreciate quite a lot that the FedEx driver included my Halloween decoration in his delivery confirmation image.

Still waiting for a more efficient explanation of everything than "Everyone got brain damage from Covid": the airline executives charging a $155 predatory premium for legroom, the guy deciding to customize his own flight experience, the chain of command aborting the whole flight—busted mind-traffic!

This is absolutely wild. I’m on a cross country flight. We are being diverted midway through to Denver. The reason? Some dude is sitting in the exit row who didn’t pay the $155 fee and he refuses to move back to his seat.

I love them both but Travis and Patrick look like they’re running a traveling medicine show in the Great Depression
Travis Kelce, wearing a newsies hat and a shirt that seems to be pattered on a motels wallpaper, and Patrick Mahomes, wearing a red checkered vest made out of an Italian restaurants tablecloth

It’s a lovely state! You should introduce them to Knoebels next summer! (Free-to-enter pay-to-ride amusement park with cabins scattered about that they used to rent but no idea if they still exist.)

I come to PA so rarely that “what do you mean I can buy a beer in quantities smaller than a keg” is still a thing that surprises me.

This is an extremely niche post, but I’ve spent the last week in Central PA, where I’ve seen a) a hard root beer and cream soda cocktail, and b) **hard birch beer**, and I just want to applaud the 80s kids of my home state for finally ascending to new heights in bar management

This announcement claims, essentially, that they have infused a book with mayonnaise. I just want people to understand that if you purchase paper books, you can infuse them with mayonnaise yourself. You will need a turkey baster and a squeegee. And mayonnaise.

no no the publishing industry is doing fine, why do you ask

Jennifer L. Armentrout and Hellmann's
In a promotion designed for BookTok enjoyment, Jennifer L. Armentrout’s just-published THE PRIMAL OF BLOOD AND BONE is available in a special, limited-edition "garlic-scented copy, infused with Hellmann’s Garlic Aioli to create a one-of-a-kind, Craven-proof book." They explain: "This exclusive edition is printed with garlic-infused ink, designed to ward off Armentrout’s bloodthirsty monsters, the Craven. While humans may dread garlic breath, Hellmann’s has cleverly transformed this social faux pas into an unexpected – and delicious – form of supernatural protection."
