"15 years ago, Polish workers came here to find opportunity. Now Poland is growing twice as fast as we are," says Kemi Badenoch.

Any ideas what may have happened in the interim?

It’s blame, too: blaming young people for not earning enough & for having problems with anxiety & depression. And not a thought about the social & economic conditions that might be making life tough for the young. Good luck getting this generation to vote for you, Kemi.

From today’s Playbook - I find it curious that none of these political geniuses ever seem to consider how UK GDP growth might have looked in the few years post Brexit (a time of acute focus on relative economic performance) w/out immigration.
From today’s politico playbook:

Exhibit A: "The Boriswave — and we should call it that - has f*cked us. Our record on everything in the last government, prisons, immigration, economy, is sh*t," one Tory figure lamented last night. "There's naivety at the top about just how much time they need to be spending doing surgery and showing we're learning our lessons from the last government, and the whole 'we'll look like the grown-ups eventually' thing isn't going to work."

Although Badenoch doesn’t mean Oxford. As ever (and we’ve seen versions of this not-quite-policy for years), it looks like it would target universities more than courses. Elitism is always ok.

This makes me so angry. These people view all life as training for lifelong servitude/work. There's no room for interest, enjoyment, and culture in their bleak vision of education. At least she'll never be in power to see it through. Though Reform are probably worse.
Badenoch: Curb students taking "rip-off" degrees such as English. The performing arts, sociology and anthropology are among the subjects the Conservatives would like to cut

And within a minute there’s a Tory with a new group to blame for our problems. Young people with anxiety and depression: sounds like a decent electoral strategy. #r4today

Ah, yes. Tories' popularity is flagging, so why not ask one of Australia's most hilariously unpopular PMs for advice?

Tony Abbott's plan for undocumented migrants? "Hold them in some kind of a mothership" and invade a neighbouring country "on a quiet and moonless night". Clown.

This is the same level of nuance and reflection that gave the UK hard Brexit

Kuenssberg: “Where would the 150,000 people you plan to deport each year actually go?”
Badenoch: “I’m tired of irrelevant questions.”
The Tories have an idiot in charge, one who doesn’t know NI voted Remain or why deportation deals even matter. #ukpolitics

Many pundits today are pushing the line that everyone who protests the genocide in Gaza is basically either antisemitic or tolerant of antisemitism. But isn't that precisely the conflation of the actions of the Israeli gov't with all Jewish people, which is at the heart of this wave of antisemitism?

Six weeks ago, I picked up a year-old tawny owl with a broken leg off the main road near our home and dropped him off at our nearest vet.

After a few days, I received one of the most bizarre phone calls I’ve ever had, asking “So when are you coming to pick up your owl?” 🧵

If this, seriously, is Badenoch’s best attack-line against Mahmood, she might be in even more trouble than we thought. #bbclaurak

Indeed. Given that uni managers have been saying for years that home fees don’t cover costs, over-recruitment is hardly a sign of health. It’s evidence of desperation - to stave off the cuts happening just about everywhere.

But it’s extraordinary how that piece can have been written without any account of the more common experience across uk universities: under-recruitment, contraction, ongoing redundancies. Over-recruitment is a temporary problem of the privileged elite.

This is a great piece of local journalism - about all those flags going up in Brum.

Some interesting details.

Ryan Bridge has become a familiar face in Stirchley lately. He's one of two "company directors" of raisetheflags.org, where he collects donations from £10-£500 for flags.

This Israeli government decision to host Tommy Robinson will widen the growing gulf between the Netanyahu government and the British public, including the broad majority of Jews in Britain (3/4 of whom dsapproved of Netanyahu, before this new link to this anti-Muslim racist UK far right convict).
