Sometimes I feel like a big dummy for trying to write about culture, and then the Atlantic publishes a brain dead take that gives me the confidence boost I need to continue blogging

A very happy 30th birthday to bisexuality, born this day in 1995 🎂

Had a really wonderful conversation with one of my favorite authors, David Sodergren (@paperbacksandpugs.bsky.social) about the incredible freedom of self publishing, Scotland as an underused horror setting, and a lifetime of loving the genre: scare-me.beehiiv.com/p/david-sode...

Humbly requesting a setting for social media apps that plays all inspirational weight loss content backwards. I am proud of all of you but my ED rat brain cannot be trusted

I can barely express how gutwrenching it is to steal health care away from trans kids and essentially force them into conversion therapy defector.com/on-bridges?g...
Dysphoria and all the surrounding feelings are notoriously difficult to describe clearly, so here is the best metaphor I can come up with for what I want to talk about. Imagine, when you were a kid, that there was an intersection in your neighborhood that you regularly had to walk across, and it was a dangerous endeavor every time: There's no crosswalk, the cars don't respect speed limits, and everyone runs red lights or turns without looking. You did what you could to survive these perilous journeys, but maybe not every kid got to the other side unscathed. Imagine, then, that years later you passed through your old hometown and found that, since you left, a stylish pedestrian bridge had been built at this intersection. You see a bunch of kids, and they're laughing with each other as they use it to cross safely, not even aware of all the times that you, years ago, just barely missed getting smashed by a car.

This was a really joyful conversation—Joe is a delight and had so many interesting thoughts about the relationship between horror and queer culture, particularly the missing generation of artists we lost to AIDS. There also *might* be a few hints about his next project 👀

Two copies of Phantasmag, an indie magazine, on a background of green fabric. Both magazines are shades of purple with black illustrations of horror imagery, including chains, gravestones, and skulls.
