#3 - The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. An absolute classic. I plan to read LOTR later this year and I expect myself to end up loving The Hobbit more now than I did as a child (I wanted to know EVERYTHING then but now I love letting the mystery be).

It is - but I definitely recommend learning to shoot manual because once you know how it all works and how to deploy it, it's a gamechanger! I actually used this book to teach myself years back - just read it cover to cover and followed all the instructions and advice.

My road trip game (tentatively titled 1,000 Miles from Home) is pretty much in a playtest-ready state! Now to organize a playtest... Here are a few little bits of the WIP rules thus far.

It's a wonderful illustrated copy I picked up from my local used bookseller last year. Tons of incredible art from Michael Hague.

New (old) book day - starting my own Year of Tolkien to read along with Shelved By Genre.

#2 - Sometime Lofty Towers by David C. Smith (from @newedgeswordmag.bsky.social). This one really hit me in a way I didn't expect - much deeper and more affecting than I imagined from what seemed, at first, like by-the-numbers sword and sorcery. I'll be thinking about this one for a while!

Double new book day! Breaking in my ereader with some new sword and sorcery and diving into a haunted house story I've heard good things about.

New Year - New Book Thread!

#1 - The Horse and His Boy by C. S. Lewis

I enjoyed this one less than Magician's Nephew, but it really grew the scope and variety of the world in fun ways. By the end, I was very endeared to its characters and enjoyed how it wove into and out of Wardrobe's story.

In the last Missive, I said 2026 would be the year I finally figure out how to write something that gets included in a blog/newsletter roundup. Within hours of the new year dawning, it happened!

Spending the first moments of the New Year with my familiar (it's 2026 here now).

The road trip game is shaping up nicely - hoping to release TEST TRIP, the ashcan I'll be playtesting, sometime next month. It's a Lasers & Feelings core with some additional mechanics bolted on to replicate road trip vibes, use real maps to guide play, and more. Definitely beyond a one-pager.

FIREDROP just got an Unsung Hero award (or whatever they are callin' em) from @theweeklyscroll.com! I am still really proud of this game, especially as my first foray into non-TTRPG stuff. Check it out HERE: shop.meatcastlegameware.com/products/fir...
