Hubert didn’t anticipate such a reaction. Granted, Ferdinand did express his aversion toward the self-absorbed prick of a lording, in no uncertain terms. Still, Hubert didn’t expect much more than an eyeroll when he suggested they have the man flayed for wasting Prime Minister’s precious time. Instead Ferdinand laughs - the wild kind that catches you by surprise and punches all the air out of you. Beside the volume, it’s nothing like the practised pleasant chortle the palace staff knows. This one stings his eyes with tears and knots his voice into an undignified snort that would shock anyone who only met the Prime Minister. It might be Hubert's favorite one to hear. “You!” Ferdinand finally manages to wheeze out, catching his breath. “You are terrible.” “And you are laughing,” Hubert points out, calm and delighted. “I am and I hate it.” Ferdinand covers his mouth with his fingers, lest another fit dares to escape. He takes a breath and levels Hubert with a look so scornful it can only be feigned. “Your wickedness knows no bounds - because of your influence, I now find amusement in your dreadful jokes.”

Hubert clasped his hands behind his back, his face grim as he looked out of the window, where the snow continued piling up. A stark, colourless landscape spread out as far as eye could see, a fine mirror to his own state of mind. The spirits had been low since the beginning of his house arrest – no, lady Edelgard, he was not being dramatic – and the end of his confinement seemed nowhere in sight, because suddenly everyone he knew was a medical expert, and so he was stuck in torturous idleness, until Linhardt would clear him for duty after his illness. He didn't look back even when the door to the bedroom flew open. Only one other person had a key, and besides he'd recognise those footsteps anywhere. "How may I be of assistance?" "Hubert!" Rustling of skirts as Ferdie crossed the room. "You are supposed to be resting." Finally, Hubert turned around, a frown twisting the corners of his lips. "I am tired of resting. And you are trailing snow everywhere." The other looked down, as if only now noticing the snowflakes melting on her overcoat and leaving puddles all over the floor. She offered him a sheepish smile. "Forgive me, I did not realise in my hurry to see you." Hubert quickly averted his face, lest he be won over so easily. Behind him, Ferdie untangled herself from her shawl, and draped her coat over a chair. "You are not truly cross with me," she said into the silence, then added, oddly hesitant: "Are you?" He shook his head. "Of course not." "I will take your word for it," Ferdie laughed, wrapping her arms around Hubert's waist from behind. She pressed a kiss to his temple and rested her chin on his shoulder, looking out through the lacework of frost creeping up the window. "What are we looking at?" "Nothing," Hubert said, leaning into the embrace. "Which is coincidentally all I have accomplished today." "A rare sight," his wife teased rubbing her chilly cheek against Hubert's. "Now, back to bed with you." Because Hubert von Vestra, the minister of the imperial household and decorated general, didn't whine, the sound he made had to be just a perfectly mature noise of displeasure when Ferdie peeled herself away and went about taking off her jewellery and loosening her hair for the evening. "If I didn't know you, I'd think you relish in your cruelty," Hubert grumbled. The other moved to the window seat where they spent many happy mornings sharing breakfast, reading the news, or simply enjoying each other's company. "I know," she said, holding out her hand, "everyone is terribly unjust to you." He accepted hand, and let himself be pulled down. "Not even trying to defend yourself, I see how it is," he murmured, though there was no real venom in it. That earned him a quick peck on the corner of his mouth. "You must be feeling better if you have so much energy to argue." She pressed the back of her hand against his forehead and a small wrinkle appeared between her brows. He loved that wrinkle, but not being the cause of it. "The evenings are always worse," he reminded her. Slowly, he lay down until his head was resting in her lap. As much of a concession to the general fussing as he was willing to make. The hand previously on his forehead slid down, calloused fingers running through his hair. He reached out to stroke her knee, sinking into the warmth, willingly drowned in the soothing caresses. "You can close your eyes, I shall wake you for dinnertime." He kept his eyes open, watching her with unmasked fondness. "You should not be made to suffer my ill humour." "Nonsense," she whispered, scratching his nape in that way that made him melt no matter how many times she employed that trick. "I am very fond of your ill humour."
