#11 The Wicker Man (1973) Folk horror has been back in vogue for at least a decade now but there's still nothing like The Wicker Man. Songs! Animal totems! Weird ideas about virginity! It feels very silly right up until it doesn't.
movie poster for The Wicker Man showing a huge "man" made of sticks with a ladder leading into his middle. Behind him are flames.

Everything the GOP says is crafted to become a soundbite on FOX that will reassure the credulous dipshits of America that It's Fine, Everything's Fine. It doesn't matter if it's all lies & even if someone calls out the lies it will just be edited out & this is just a demoralizing way to live.

#10 Mandy (2018) In which Nicolas Cage out-Nicolas Cages himself. If I were a billionaire I'd give Panos Cosmatos $100 million and free reign.
movie poster for Mandy, featuring a blood-covered Nicolas Cage wearing a tactical vest & a chainsaw slung over his should. In the background there are images of a woman's face and a burning car.

Well I say letting the wealthy continue to vacuum up all the wealth in the world is killing society and the planet we inhabit.

October book #1: The Unicorn is Iris Murdoch's take on the 1960s dimestore gothic romance. This is a book about about a bunch of weirdos trapped in a stately home between a sea cliff & a deadly bog. If that isn't enough to sell you, everyone is secretly gay & constantly chugging whisky 5/5
paperback copy of Iris Murdoch's The Unicorn on a wooden table. The book has unique rounded edges and the cover shows an illustration of a woman lying in an elaborate blue & purple canopied bed.

Historically I've chosen to extend my hatred of the CSI franchise to all of CBS, so I'm kind of excited to watch Bari Weiss burn it down.

It's weird that they let Zapp Brannigan write a Times op-ed.

#9 The other heavy hitter from the 1970s on this list is 1973's The Exorcist, a movie about how horrible it would be if God was actually real. Probably a perfect film. Skip Exorcist II but III is very much worth a look if you've never.
movie poster for The Exorcist - the title and "Directed by William Friedkin" is in text at the top. A b/w image of a man holding a case & standing under a streetlamp is in the middle and the remainder of the movie attributions are in a purplish text box at the bottom.

The photograph on the album cover, "Fate Descends Towards the River Leading Two Innocent Children" (1970), is by photographer Jan Saudek, born in Prague, Czechoslovakia in 1935. Two months after the album's release, Czechoslovakia ceased to be a country. At 90, Saudek lives in Prague, now in Czechia

#8 Dario Argento was a bit obscure when I started watching his movies back when Netflix mailed out DVDs. Now he's everywhere & Suspiria (1977) is rightly regarded as his masterpiece. Ostensibly about witches, really about Argento's flair for visuals, give it a watch if you've been skipping it.
movie poster for Suspiria showing the b/w image of an dancer with extended arms dripping red blood which forms a pool in the center of the image. The text reads Dario Argento above the pool and Suspiria below it.

#7 Angel Heart is a 1987 detective noir/voodoo horror/Jacobean drama that got Lisa Bonet fired from The Cosby Show & was saddled with an NC17 rating by the MPAA (director Alan Parker had to cut 10 seconds). If ur local come watch it at Casa Video @ 8pm on 10/26, I'm making a flyer & everything.

It's honestly very satisfying that the apple cider vinegar people have to eat shit, just as it was satisfying when the coconut oil people had to eat shit.

#6 The only movie from the 1990s in my top 15 is Antonia Bird's Ravenous (1999). A must-see for fans of historical horror or cannibal horror or Guy Pearce or Robert Carlyle & about as deranged as a movie can be while still somehow falling into the category of a fun watch. Also a great group movie!
movie poster for 1999's Ravenous, showing the actors Guy Pearce and Robert Carlyle reflected in the blade of the knife with text Ravenous in white and the tagline Survival is the Only Option in red.
