Because Black people know that there is no such thing as “identification” or “identifying yourself”. They aren’t saying Padilla didn’t identify himself as a U.S. Senator. They are saying that there is only one acceptable identity — credential — being white and, in these times, being pro-Trump.

That's one of the things that is generally different from the US and France. France has a public that is socialized to accept protest. It's like bad weather annoying but you work around it. The US media has spent half a century treating protest as violence that you shouldn't have to deal with

When they say peaceful they mean not disruptive. They interpret any interruption of the status quo as violent
"it's not peaceful for people to be on the highway" -LA Mayor Karen Bass right now.

This is what I mean when I say the word "peaceful" as applied to protesters is about prescribing placidity, not nonviolence.

Calmly marching on a freeway is pretty inarguably nonviolent. " Peaceful" you can debate

Let's talk about these two department store owners: brother and sister Louis Bamberger and Caroline Bamberger Fuld. From Newark, New Jersey.

They are random people, basically. But in the late 1920s, with fascism taking over Europe, they made a choice that profoundly changed the world: 🧵

Brutal account of what it’s like to teach at the University of Florida right now in the NYT—extraordinary climate of fear. People afraid to say intersectional and talk about lynchings. Fake students trying to entrap Muslim faculty or just making things up altogether. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/07/o...

Michael Birkner rocks, and so does this course on Eisenhower. Lots of great info in this course about #NATO, the Cold War, McCarthyism, etc. that are relevant to our current moment.
A new self-paced course is now available! Learn about Dwight D. Eisenhower's career as a soldier, educator, and statesman with Professor Michael J. Birkner (Gettysburg College).

Echoing this.
Truly, what's the point of these universities employing all of these scholars who dedicate their lives to studying and learning from history if they're just going to make the same mistakes (re:collaboration) wrt to fascism and authoritarianism again and again
Columbia's Provost evidently sent this message to faculty forbidding them from moving classes offline or canceling them amid ICE activity on campus.

I’m forcing myself to reflect on life these days. Who knows where it’ll take me, but it’s a weird world out there, so I figured I’d try and write my way through it.
A beginning
I have never been a particularly hopeful person. It's always come more naturally for me to sit with melancholy than with joy, even before I started accumulating enough life experiences to warrant it. ...

In Texas, said one doctor: “We’ve vaccinated multiple kids that have never been vaccinated before, some from families that didn’t believe in vaccines.”
