Because it feels relevant as we continue to evaluate the media and our representatives’ statements, my favorite way to identify the active vs. passive voice.
A post by Rebecca Johnson:
“I finally learned how to teach my guys to ID the passive voice. If you can insert "by zombies" after the verb, you have passive voice.”

A tumblr respond from mightymur:
“The final, brilliant word on passive voice.
"She was killed [by zombies.]"<--passive
"Zombies killed [by zombies] her." <-- active”

No, didn’t have time. My DH’s ancestors lived in Cave Hill vicinity and also Bourbon County so maybe another trip sometime. Good luck to you in your studies!

A few days ago I had some quiet time at Pleasant Hill, the famed utopian Shaker community in KY. They built right along a turnpike and made every effort to convert people by example but ultimately their beliefs were far too radical, especially simplicity and equality. Very sobering.

Same for my Oregonian husband.

A classic! ‘Oregon’ itself is a giveaway for some folks.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

Hooray, Christy! Keep shining that light!

The “compact” for higher ed is an unserious document written by unserious people from a position of spectacular ignorance. No one should take it seriously. Sadly, my bosses are taking it seriously.

Thanks so much for including my book in your thread about Marrow of Tradition, Ben. I have an essay on the historiography of 1898 coming out soon. The men who overthrew the Wilm govt used similar tactics as we are seeing now, eg faking an urban riot to justify military force. Horrifying.

The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video

Agree. A colleague says she has an inner self (called Crazy Susan) that only gets let out at home, where she can say what she *really* thinks. I love that idea—but you shouldn’t even be yourself at home. Not unless you live alone. 😏

Too many shitty people grew up being told to “be themselves.” That’s not good advice for everyone, folks. Some people should try to be like somebody else.

I get to post this meme again! It’s my header for some reason.
That famous meme of a guy looking at a pretty woman and whistling while his actual girt looks at him in disbelief but the pretty woman is labeled the historic crises I’m living through and the girlfriend is labeled the historic crises I’m supposed to be researching. The guy is of course labeled ME.
