I know this is supposed to be the happy place, yet I persist. Some of the 400 window-struck birds I documented this fall while collision monitoring for @nycbirdalliance.bsky.social. Let’s make some noise for upcoming bird-friendly legislation!

Window collision #2337, scarlet tanager; Bklyn, NY, May 2, 2025. I find window-struck migratory birds in such a haunting array of conditions and poses; but this one was especially sad. I can’t help but wonder what her last few minutes of life were like. Data + body to @nycbirdalliance.bsky.social

Smatterings of progress across the city and bird-friendly legislation is helping. Some buildings have been proactive, but some of the worst offenders remain apathetic (at best).

From the x archives, 10/22/23: “Before dawn today, hordes of birds flew in to NYC’s WTC area from their overnight journeys. They were everywhere, calling, flitting; so much activity. The trees were full of warblers + it was beautiful + I am heartbroken that so many collided w glass.”

Landmarks by Robert Macfarlane; it’s so special.

Can confirm; dark-eyed juncos vs glass doesn’t end well for the juncos.

Beth and the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing make me not mind humans quite so much. (One can find themself a bit misanthropic at the end of bird migration!)

Thank you! And yes, pretty much! Don’t like leaving my bird crowd at the other place, but … here we are!
